Fabio Luisi has quitted his job as the General Music Director of the Saxon State Opera and the Staatskapelle Dresden. This is a serious drawback for their wonderful cycle of works by Richard Strauss. I sincerely hope that we'll still be able get the Zarathustra disc, though...

They were performing the program with Ax on their Far East tour last year, so we can only hope that the recording has already been made.I would assume the recording contract is for the entire Strauss cycle. As an orchestra they are known for their association with Strauss, so I would imagine if the recording is done they will want to release it.

Did he truly throw down his baton and storm off the podium in disgust? Or did he simply give notice that he would resign his position at some date in the future?

Just because a conductor has chosen to leave a music director post does not necessarily mean that he will refuse to conduct that orchestra ever again. Just look at Solti in Chicago, or Bernstein in New York. If a contract is already in place for this team to record a Strauss cycle, there's nothing stopping them from fulfilling it.

He resigned effective immediately. The OperaChic website has a scoop of the resignation letter, addressed to all his colleagues. See http://operachic.typepad.com/opera_chic/2010/02/fabio-luisi-announces-early-resignation-opera-chic-has-the-scoop.html

It was announced a few months ago that he would not be staying after this season. No conspiracy, no toys out of prams, just life.

Money is often a contributory reason especially if he was facing no pay rise or even a pay cut as part of a new contract, as many musicians in the US orchestras are.

Not quite, I am afraid. What prompted Luisi's immediate resignation appears to have been the orchestra management's decision to have Thielemann, the orchestra's next music director (taking over at the beginning of the 2011/12 season), conduct the New Year's Eve Concert 2010, when this honour should have fallen to Luisi, the incumbent music director. Allegedly, no one informed Luisi about this decision or discussed it with him before it was made (and communicated to the press); hence his immediate and abrupt resignation, and the hurt feelings expressed in his letter.

this is all a great shame. i saw luisi conduct a stupendous heldenleben with the orchestra in dresden, and rosenkavalier at the semperoper. both wonderful occasions. their SACD strauss series is superb. i do hope we see the rest of it.

Thanks for this up-date. haven't seen that anywhere else.
