It is upsetting to find more and more SACDs [especially hybrids] coming out in digipaks
I would prefer all SACDs whether hybrid or not come out in the curved edge jewel plastic case.
It appears Universal in Europe is increasingly utilising the digipak packaging for both CDs and hybrids
at least then when you are sorting through your collection of SACDs and CDs ypou can find the sacds easier!

Digipaks are evil. Sure, they look nice. But I don't just buy discs to put in a museum. I take them from and put them back on a shelf. Each movement destroys the idiotic Digipack even more.

I personally don't mind digipaks. Sometimes the presentation is quite elegant. The cases I hate are jewel cases (single and multi) that hold 2+ discs. Also, I haven't found a local supplier to replace cracked "Super Jewel Box" cases (these ones with the curved corners).

By the way, wait till you see the new Super Jewel Cases with Curved Corners. Telarc is using them. They don't have the SACD logo any more, and the booklet is almost unremovable.
Plus, they have this 'Press' thing on the side, like DVDA Super Jewel Boxes.

The new Fantasy releases employ these befuddling new cases too. A rather large pain in the arse, I might say.

What I don't like about the curved edge jewel boxes is very much in line with Stephen's comment about availability. The dimensions of the backside artwork are such that when you receive a new disk with a shattered case you cannot replace it with a standard jewel box.

I rather like digipacks. As I was accustomed to placing my LPs in mylar sleeves to protect the jackets, I have no trouble doing so with the few digpacks I've gotten so far.

Yes it is a small dilemma. From an artistic standpoint I preper the digipaks. The original cover artwork, which I prize on older titles, is more closely reproduced. However, wear and tear will take its toll on the digipak versus the super jewel box. Additionally, if the center "spindle" on the digipak breaks, what do you do then? You're stuck with packaging you cannot replace.

The super jewel boxes are certainly more durable and nicer than the traditional jewel box. I don't see any kind of problem with the "latching" mechanism being used on some of the newer super jewel boxes. It's no big deal.

Finally I wish that Sony would differentiate via packaging their SACD product from standard CD produt. You tell me, other than a few miniscule notes on the booklet inner back page about production and engineering, what is the difference between the remastered Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" CD and the SACD version. Kind of cheap and tacky if you ask me. From a marketing standpoint they are trying to promote a new product. Then make it new and different in sight and sound. You have to get people to look at it before they will buy and listen to it.

Last and probably least, have you noticed that in the super jewel boxes some of the booklets exit out the side like standard jewel boxes and some exit out the top? Any preference or problems here?

yes, I have had the centre spindle break on a number of my digipak CD titles
very frustrating
I gather eventually you will be able to buy replacement jewel plastic cases.
If anyone knows of the manufacturer for these "super" jewel cases, I wouldn't mind finding out if you can buy them directly via the net

I suppose that is one option - they may last a bit longer
they remind me of the "gatefold" album covers of the late 60s and early 70s
I am not saying they are not nice to the eye but they wont stand up to a bit of wear and tear.....
I like how ECM places a cardboard sleeve over their CD jewel case ...I thought that would be the way to go......although I prefer just the jewel case.

thanks Dinko - it appears that these curved edged jewel cases were not just intended for SACD but replace the existing jewel case
i only first saw this super jewel case on SACDs - I thought Sony/Philips designed it especially for SACD ...now I look around i have even noticed local band 'powderfinger' using the Super Jewel Case .........check out the NEW slim version of the SJC I hope to get my hands on some of them as well.
