This disc has been nominated for a BBC Music Award. The decision what album will win depends on the outcome of a public vote. This is the finest performance of the Trout I can remember ever hearing. Helmchen has an ineffably tender, touching way with Schubert's quietest moments. Read Polynomial's fine review for more insight into why, if you don't already own the disc, you should acquire it at once.

And do us all a favor, VOTE for this disc, I note that Channel's Mahler 4th is a nominee in the orchestral category - vote for both!

I agree with this choice.............even though it was panned in Fanfare.

My copy has just arrived, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet -- and, yes, I voted for it in the BBC Musc Awards. I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the nominations in some of the other categories, although the orchestral one from my perspective was obvious enough!!

According to the PentaTone Mews Letter anyone who has not voted yet can still do so at the link above.

Yes, yes -- Castor and Polly Nomial are quite right: a marvelous disc. Super sound, super venue, super musicians.

However, I find myself possessed of a minor quibble, a small thing which annoys me more than a small thing should. Not a big issue, but a curious matter. I spent most of the last week's evenings listening to all the Trouts I have (8, but I can't find my copy of Chuckerbutty Ocarina Quartet), plus a few on-line, investigating the matter.

One could easily describe the five instruments of this quintet as a piano quartet with a contrabass stuck in. And one could easily describe its five momements as a standard four-movement piece with the variations on 'Die Forelle' stuck in. But that is too easy; Good Old D667 just wouldn't be on the charts were it not for that low-frequency colour and that silly fish. Well the fish isn't really silly, its capture mirrors that of the author Schobart, lured back from exile and into his enemy's dungeon. My point is, we buy copy after copy of 'The Trout' because of that giddy ditty*. So my ears were perked for Track Four... and IT DIDN'T SOUND QUITE RIGHT.

I suspect it is the same 'stylistic' thing that Polly's review refers to: "It is rather the stylistic choices of the ensemble that make the difference.... When heard in combination, the account takes on a distinctly central European flavour most appropriately...". Granted, it is indeed only a matter of degree, but Helmchen et alia seem, to my ears, to place the ac-CENTS on the wrong syl-LABLE. Central European accents?
_________
* The tune is captivating enough to have attracted the attention of british schoolboys who invented their own lyrics, which begin "The sex-life of the camel is stranger than anybody thinks...".

There are outstanding soloists in this quintet.
