Discussion: Nielsen & Aho: Clarinet Concertos - Martin Fröst

Well, sometimes I'm a dunderhead. I've had a lifelong interest in the clarinet and still perform on occasion, but it was only recently that I finally got around to purchasing this recording of the Nielsen concerto. I'm literally astounded and have placed this performace at the head of the class, even above my cherished Stanley Drucker/New York Philharmonic/Leonard Bernstein LP. Reading along with the music, he bends and shapes every nuance of the score in ways I have never heard before while still conveying the underlying combination of beauty, tension and outright agitation (especially in evidence during the snare drum interplay). And beautifully recorded as well. As we say in America, this guy is unreal! And I don't even want to SEE the score to the Aho :-) If I was prone to jealousy....

Congratualtions for signing Mr. Frost, Robert. In my opinion, you have now the finest clarinetist and flutist recording today in your stable.

P.S. I hope to see Sharon's recording of the flute concerto soon!

Thank you for this. This is, indeed, what gives me the biggest pleasure of all the aspects of this business: defining and pinpointing those extremely few extraordinary talents before anyone else - and then doing something about it. Except for the two mentioned above, people like Christian Lindberg, trombone, Håkan Hardenberger, trumpet, Dan Laurin, recorder, Öystein Baadsvik, tuba, Alexei Ogrintjuk, oboe, just to stay with winds, all of whom were discovered by yours truly. They are all in that undefinable but definitely "unreachable" class.

Sharon has indeed recorded "her" Nielsen, but it is only up for release next year - other things have priority.

Thank you for your kind lines - Robert

I'm looking forward to acquiring my first Martin Frost recording, and have it down to his Brahms sonatas and this disc. The Nielsen is a favorite piece of mine, but (alas, perhaps) the gold standard for me in this work is the BIS record featuring Olle Schill and the Gothenburg SO/Chung. Can anyone compare that recording to this one? And does anyone concur with one of the reviewers that Frost is too forwardly-balanced?

Frost is forward in the mix, but I don't think it's excessive or irritating. In fact, the whole perspective of the recording is close and forward, not very atmospheric. Keep in mind that I listen in multichannel, not stereo. I have never heard that other BIS recording, so I can't help you there.
