Discussion: Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 - Litton

A tad disappointing in my view. Amiable enough performances but somehow a bit lacklustre and hurried with a slightly undifferentiated sound that left me somewhat underwhelmed. As a committed Litton-ian, he is after all 'our' (BSO) conductor laureate, I buy all his discs as a matter of course anyway so the wisdom of purchasing this disc for me is not an issue.

Many will be satisfied 'though and a full SACD set is much needed.

I guess I'm a little more positive about this release. Nice sonics; a little laid back; but quite enjoyable. This release led me to buy the 3rd and 5th with the same forces. I haven't spent enough time with it yet, but I think this latest entry is less satisfying, especially in the 5th.

a contrasting assessment is provided by BBC music magazine, whose 5 star/5 star disc of the month this is. they liked the 2nd symphony too.

I noticed that as well. It is usually a time to celebrate when one of the mags names a SACD as it's Disc of the Month but I just cannot agree with them on this one. Still who am I to disagree?

This German review likes the interpretation a lot (http://www.klassik-heute.com/kh/3cds/20100115_19542.shtml) but claims to hear a somewhat unstable stereo image, with violas and celli occasionally, and artificially, shifting towards the right. Has anybody else noticed this, or should we safely ignore that aspect of the review?

As noticed elsewhere, the same reviewer has been enthusiastic about BIS' recent Fitkin SACD.
