Hi, all.
I just embraced the SACD thing with my purchase of an SACD/CD player. It's a Sony SCD-2222 (?). It makes a high-frequency mechanical noise (i.e., noise in the room, not in the audio outputs) when a disc is spinning. Think: Hampster on crack. Needless to say, this is not going to work, although apparently it is normal for this machine.
Have any of you experienced noisy operation with other players? Are there some that are dead quiet? This noise is low enough that I didn't notice it in the stereo store, but loud enough that it really bugs me at home.

If the noise is loud enough that you can detect it from even a few feet away when quiet musical passages are playing something is not right. There shouldn't be any obtrusive mechanical noise except under an unusual circumstance like a warped disc playing.

Hi Dan,
I have a Sony SCD c222ES as well as a 555ES and hear no such noise. Something is definitely wrong! These are nice players, especially when modified.

Yes, that's the model I have. I was posting from work and didn't have it in front of me; I have a terrible memory for such things. So the dealer is telling me that the noise is normal (he'll take the player back and give me a refund) but yours makes no noise?
And I hesitate to ask - how are these things modified and why?
Also - what others players are forum frequenters using and which are good?

I find the Sony SCD-1 really good. I'm very happy with both the SACD and regular (Redbook) CD performance. It's built extremely well and is super quiet mechanically. This player is limited to two channel playback only but for me that's not a problem.
