I see two of you have recommended this disc (as well, I suspect, as the Karajan Schoenberg/Berg/Webern disc). At $60 plus shipping, though I'm interested, I'm reluctant to splurge until I hear some feedback. How do these sound? I don't need performance info, since these are classics of their era.
Thanks!
Bret

Very first PCM digital recording (I don't know 14-bit or 16-bit recording) of DGG, what can you expect after DSD remastered?

The original recording is "not too bad" (DG 400 037-2). It was a multiple award winner including Penguin Rosette. I have it in front of me now. Although the digital recording on CD was made in 1981, the cover says also that the recording was previously released as 2532 003 which is a vinyl code number from the 1970's. No information is given on recording location or date.

This site

http://www.thrsw.com/ckdisc/brahms_johannes_1833_1897_/

states the following recording detail;

Vienna , Musikvereinssaal
16 December , 1979 ; Live Recordings
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

That is quite close to the release date of the CD so chances are it was an original low resolution digital recording. We must hope that analogue tapes were recorded simultaneously as back-up safety-net as digital recording was in its infancy then. In which case the analogue tapes might have been used for this new transcription. I hope this is the case despite all the layers of speculation that might lead to such a conclusion.

The initial LP release says "digital" on the cover.

BTW, you misquoted the discography page, the info for this recording is

Vienna , Musikvereinssaal
12 and 15 March , 1980
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Somewhat related to the topic;

I believe that DG has SACD version of Kleiber Beethoven 5, I have the earlier CD version of the same, any comments regarding the audio quality of the SACD version?

I have had this on LP and at least two different CD's and the sound is dreadful. The performance is good, but highly overrated.

For Klieber Beethoven 5, the 'Originals' CD version sounds better than the SACD.

You are right. I just came back on to correct it:

Vienna , Musikvereinssaal
12 and 15 March , 1980
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Hi Edvin

Was the vinyl disc digitally recorded? If so my faint hope of salvation from analogue master tapes goes out the window.
