If Pentatone can master in surround sound the Philips 1970's QUAD recordings and price them at $19.98 (usually discounted to as low as $13.40 brand new), then Teac-Esoteric which I'm sure has deeper pockets than Pentatone can import them into the US for a lot less than $60 and $70 (unless one wants to use the fancy packaging as coasters for a "fruity" beverage!)

Maybe or maybe not. This is not the best comparison to make as Pentatone are de facto Philips Classical, same building, same people, similar cothes but a different hat. (this is where I get panned!) Licence fees may be minimal.

What we really should ask is how much "Decca" are charging for access to their original masters and licence fees.

For sure they are not doing it for altruistic reasons

I wouldn't walk out of the store unless I was entirely satisfied that I wasn't being gouged on that pack of coloured pencils.

Or better yet, make sure to try to make your own coloured pencils of equal quality. Or much better yet(?), get the government involved to regulate your kitchen factory and set your price.

sorry for the delay in my reply...I'm not much of a blogger...too busy trying to run a business... specially in the month of December...margins on all these Esoteric SACD are less then 30%...also the main reason I joined the forum was because one of our loyal customers and forum members(who you can thank for causing the USA retail price of this Box to be lowered) took the time to send be a nice and funny email about the crazy USA retail price on the Wagner SACD Box which I certainly thought was crazy high when I first saw it...but had no idea what it went for around the world...Once I did I knew something was wrong and looked into it and this was the best place to make a post about it.

Finally I couldn't agree more that everyone should buy from who they "like" based on their own buying criteria...price, service, packaging, fast shipping, whatever.

The best way to divert unfair accusations (and they were obviously unfair) is with facts, which of course was the reason for my original and subsequent posts. Thanks for providing them.

Last seen on a street corner peddling what looked like home made colored pencils.

As a collector on a budget, I spend a lot of time searching for the best value for my money. That said, it is very easy to fall into the trap (as I believe Rammiepie and others have done) of believing "because I found a bargain price, that represents the true value" of a product.

I consistently buy Bis discs for around $12 and PenaTones for around $13 or $14 by taking advantage of competition and sale pricing. So when i see them at Elusive Disc for $18.99 and $19.99 respectively, and then I see an item like the Opus 3 Brahms clarinet works for $29.99 when there IS NO competitive source, it leads to the surface suspicion of price gouging.

But the fact is, without some big selling items to drive traffic Elusive Disc almost assuredly has to hedge a little bit on their margins when there's no competition to keep up with overhead.

Add in the fact that the Japanese exchange rate isn't super-favorable, and there were only 1000 copies made of a specialist audiophile product that already had a very high price in Japan, and frankly, i applaud Elusive Disc for doing as well as they are on the price!

I have the Decca Ring on LP in the deluxe box set (with the fancy metal case) from the late 1960's/early 1970's (they are in mint condition). I am debating whether to buy this SACD version. Could it be any better than the Decca pressing from this era? HELP ME DECIDE FOLKS!!!

Maybe.....:-)

I have the LP Ring circa 1970 - came with Ring Resounding. I went ahead and placed a preorder, but we will know only when we can listen.
