Back in the 1960's 14 gauge lamp cord was the audiophile UPGRADE product as speaker wire at that time was only 24 gauge and lamp cord provided considerable better bass than the thin speaker wire.

But over the decades speaker wire has improved so much it is now called speaker cable and is in gauges as big as 8, with the most popular being 12 gauge.

Paul if you have not tried speaker cable since the awful stuff available in the 1960's you would be amazed how much better it sounds that the old standard 14 gauge lamp cord.

If the year was 1969 I would agree with you completely, as lamp cord is much better than the then standard 24 gauge speaker wire. However this is 2009 and lamp cord was surpassed many decades ago.

I prefer to spend my cash on SACDs.

BTW, my interconnects ARE sounding better every day as they're getting an extraordinary workout, thank you, and thankfully, all my lamp cords are where they should be: attached to lamps. Let there be light!

After that "extraordinary workout" you should be able to save a bundle on energy costs by using your interconnects as lamp cords.

Let there be light! Indeed.

Paul are you thinking of trying the Belden Brilliance Low Cap OFHC Speaker Cables? Gauges are as large as 10 and would be a step-up from your lamp cord.

I haven't tried them but if they offer a satisfaction guarantee it might be worth checking out. Also Monster, AudioQuest, Blue Jeans Cable and a few others offer budget speaker cables of very good quality.

I too prefer to spend money on SACDs, but using lamp cord is cutting corners a little too close IMHO.

This month's Absolute Sound listed a "budget" speaker/interconnect cable called Paul Speltz "Anti-Cable." (anti-cables.com). They have been praised by reviewer SK who was blown away by its neutrality and lack of coloration and described the high frequencies as open and clear with no tizziness, a midrange of exceptional clarity, transparency and detail and a bass that was extended with remarkable articulation. They run $100 for a 1 meter pr. unless one chooses a different rca connector which is $50 more a pr./ the speaker cable terminated with spades runs $10 per foot. Yes, everyone would rather buy SACDs but what good is it if you are NOT GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR EXISTING SYSTEM. Using Monster cable to review SACDs is akin to driving a Ferrari on 2 cylinders. Monster and Bose have NAME RECOGNITION [due to massive advertising blitzes] but when push comes to shove, they suck, suck, suck and if you don't believe me ask any serious music lover and if Paul Clark really, really, really LOVED music, he'd rethink his "audio cheapskate" strategy and yes, Paul, I will always concur that MORE expensive does NOT necessarily mean BETTER, but if you want to compare bookshelf to full-range speakers, receivers to separates and zip cord to speaker cables and expect to elicit delight in attempting to play Mahler's Eighth at full throttle, then please, don't invite me over for tea anytime too soon. {But I will accept a glass of home-squeezed OJ anytime}. And probably, the BIGGEST problem of all is the atrocious AC current driving ALL components...if one switched to a generator for even an hour, the sound would blossom in spades, and you'd be asking "Is this the SAME system???????" {especially if you live in New York}

The Belden 1313A (10 AWG) - runs about $4 per meter.

Thanks for the very interesting comments and pointers on this ;-)

BTW, it was not my JRDG 102 that had the problem but my LSA Standard Integrated Amp... Up to this time, nodoby could say what happened to it so my supplier gave me a NEW replacement while they'll try to check what happened (it has power but no output).

The technician's comment about my SACD being a "possible" culprit was quite interesting, though.

Best regards,
egay
