TOKYO - Presented this Wednesday 19, a new version of PS3 model with greater memory capacity and cheaper than the current, informed the Japanese economic newspaper Nikkei. The video will be sold in the United States for $299 and in Europe for 299 euros, with effect from September 1. The new version, which aims to revive sales of the PS3 includes a hard disk of 120 gigabytes, is smaller and 34% lighter than the previous model.

Sony hopes to increase the worldwide sales of the console to offer a more competitive product ahead of competitors Xbox, Microsoft, and Wii from Nintendo, according to the Nikkei daily.
In Japan, the new PS3 will arrive in stores on Sept. 3 and will have an initial price of 29,980 yen (224 euro), 10 thousand yen (74 euros) cheaper than the current version.
The Sony also announced further efforts to increase sales in the U.S. from earlier versions of the PS3, sold for $ 299 (80 gigabytes) and $ 399 (160 gigabytes).

The company have loss of 37.1 billion yen (277 million) between April and June for fall sales, including the division of games. In the second quarter of the year, sold 1.1 million PS3, 500 thousand units less than in the same period.

...but with no SACD support, of course.

Correct. This is already the fifth or so generation of PlayStation3, and by far the most drastic redesign so far, for the first time involving an entirely new cabinet.

I guess the OP must have missed that already at the third generation SACD support was culled.

Maybe this block can be reversed as the DVD's Area Code, which was freely by a good repair man. Anyone to try?
The PS3 is too cheap, maybe a repair man service cost too much.

Well the interesting thing is, all PS3s, including this model, can play "DSD Discs" (see the Wheatus release)...

So I still am not sure what the rationale for removing SACD support was... Cost cutting and licensing doesn't make much sense...

(it still seems to have the hardware to do it, and i'm pretty sure neither Sony nor Philips have to pay the licensing to themselves.)

Dear Michi,
I know a bit about the way the Japanese companies plan and made his products and business: They do not like sell a multi-use product for a low price as the old PS1.
Because they want to sell a SACD player, a BluRay player, a cd player, a game player etc to the custumer, they hate a Universal player that read all this discs very well and with good sound.
Sony never will remove the Redbook CD from the market, while CD is selling something. Sony only care about money, and PHILIPS is worse.
All the various companies/brands PHILIPS has bought do not exist anymore, PHILIPS closed they all to eliminate competitors and less cost.
Sincerely.

Considering the PS3 was a premium product when it was first released about 3 years ago. I can understand why at half the price, a number of features have been taken away. Personally I think the majority of participants at this forum would prefer a SACD player that has a silent mechanism.

If the PSP Go and the PS4 rumors are any indication, Sony is heading away from optical-drives when it comes to gaming;

Regardless, considering the capabilities of this console, the new price tag offers great value,

No, there is hardware involved in the 'front end' of the drive, for dealing with SACD's unique copy protection measures. See http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html#_Toc180147568 It was about cost cutting for sure. Not licensing but bill of material, most likely.

@FullRangeMan,
It's not about a 'block' that has to be removed but about something that's missing that would have to be put back, however not the sort of thing your hardware repair guy could do.

According to http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20090821_309899.html it seems Sony has changed a HDMI Si9132 chip for something newer that can do HDMI-CEC and bitstreaming of nerwer high bitrate codecs (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA). It's a shame they did not include SA-CD support, as this would be a nice and quiet DSD transport. Oh, they will also enable simultaneous audio output.
