From what I've been reading, the Meitner DAC6 coupled with a modified Phillips transport is the absolute best multi-channel front end. Has anyone actually heard this unit and compared it with anything else? I've written to The Absolute Sound requesting a review. I guess these things take a while.

Here is a review: http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue7/meitner.htm

Meitner now has their own matching transport. Not heard by me (and at roughly US $16K for the pair out of my league) but I've heard nothing but praise for this. The question is how close you can get to this in performance at real world pricing.

i would'nt be surprised if Meitner answered that question themselves with a follow-up unit. I've seen this with other high end products: a statement is made by introducing a top notch product, then the technological experience is transfered with as little trade-offs as possible to a more normaly priced product. (e.g. Accuphase follows up new player converter combos with one unit players containing the same basic converter technology, B&W follows its no-limits Speaker "Model Nautilus" with an entire range of speakers containing "Nautilus Technology")

I gather this can be done now but only in stereo;

I just got my 9000ES back from Warren Gregoire yesterday. In time I'll post listening results. Multi-channel will be a very different challenge, evidently. MC is next year for me, so maybe something will happen in the meantime.

Jonathan Valin of TAS has a few words about the Meitner equipment, as does HP. I think it's fair to say they regard it as the best digital currently has to offer, in some ways better than the best of vinyl, but second best by a smidgen overall.

IME, the Meitner equipment it top-notch.
