Hello there
I have a question concerning the Denon 3930. If somebody on here has one or knows somebody owning one, please let me know. The question is concerning the Advance AL 24 Processing upsampling feature.
Mine does not turn off when I play an SACD or DVD-A directly after turning the unit on or after having played a CD. Only after I inserted a HDCD it turns off and now turns off as well, when I insert an SACD. But after another CD it stays on again. Denon could not help me or did not take me seriously. I know that the feature is not supposed to be on when high rez content is played. And there is a clearly audible difference when the AL 24 light is on while playing an SACD so it is not just the light. It sounds much worse.
Thanks for any info.

hello ear,

yes, i own a 3930. the AL 24 processing need not be on when playing an SACD, unless you've told the player to play the CD layer of the disc; however, for the player to pass the DSD signal directly to a receiver, it must be connected to the (Denon) receiver using the DL (3rd) cable. otherwise the DSD signal will be converted to PCM in the 3930 using AL 24 processing before being passed on as PCM.

does that help?

Go into the audio menu, then step down to the "Source Direct" option.

Choose the 100khz setting.
Though I'm not sure why, it deactivates the AL24 processing on SACD.

On that 100khz setting the AL24 light is still there on regular CDs but disappears as soon as the HDCD lights pops up on disc encoded that way. HDCD must overide the AL24 somehow.

As far as I can tell the AL24 remains on with DVD audio and DVD video (Classic DADs, Neil Young DVD-V 24/96 etc.)

Hope this points you in the right direction.

Note: I 'm using the analog outs when playing music. Not sure if the above applies if using any of the digital outputs.

Well, first of all thank you very much for your replies.

I cannot use the Denon Link and am using the analogue outs.
The interesting part is, that the AL24 turns off for SACD when I have inserted a HDCD beforehand. I insert the HDCD, the AL24 turns off and regularly turns off, when reading an SACD after that. BUT as soon as I have inserted a CD, it comes on again an stays on not matter if I insert an SACD until I insert a HDCD again. Funny isn't it? Just for information: After scanning a HDCD the AL light comes off WHILE reading the new discs. After a CD it stays on WHILE reading the new discs. The SACD plays with very AUDIBLE difference when the light is off.

I discoverd the solution with 100khz BUT that requires large speakers and I just have small ones. Since it bypasses the speaker config, lack of bass is the result. I have a MC system.

Does that mean that your AL24 stays on while playing SACD to if you do not set the player to 100khz?

Well thank you again. Maybe I have to pester Denon once more.

Yes

If I choose the 50khz setting on Source Direct the AL24 light stays on.
I love my 3930 but it sure is a pain to figure out sometimes. The manual sure isn't much help.

OK, since obviously there does not seem to be another way, I post a solution to this problem for people who cannot set there pure direct to 100 because this requires large speakers and bypasses the speaker config.
Insert a HDCD in the player and wait until the AL24 turns of. Sometimes this only happens when the HDCD is played. Depends on the disc. If that happend take the HDCD out and place your SACD/DVD-A or even DVD-V in the player and now the AL24 light turns off while reading the content. And it should stay off when it indentifies one of the above. Hey presto---> total difference in sound! Pure SACD Satisfaction even with small speakers. This works for me now quite a while and seems a practicable way of turning AL24 off for SACD. Little more time than pressing a button but just as effective!
