Apparently Pioneer is bringing out a new version of this SACD player, which means that existing stocks are being heavily discounted here in the UK. Anyone here own or heard one?

while searching for a new player, i checked this player out while i was in Seven Oaks UK, it sounds fab. imho, this Pioneer will match or surpass Marantz SA7003. but may not produce fine details like the Yamaha S2000, nor the XLR outputs.

fyi, eventually i settled on Sony SCD-XA5400ES based on online reviews, which i bought without hearing how it sound!

cheers,
wps

I bought the PD-D9 for about US$700 in Hong Kong earlier this year. I was also considering the Marantz 15-S2, Arcam CD37, and Yammaha 2000. The Pioneer provides more detail resolution than the Marantz, and more 3-dimensional than the Yamaha 2000. Beats my old Denon 3910 by a million miles. The Arcam CD37 also has good details and warm sounding, but don't think it's worth twice the price of the Pioneer.

Very happy with my choice and think it's good value.

Thanks. The Pioneer arrives this morning. Heavily discounted at the moment as mk 2 version now available.

the Pioneer is a very good choice indeed. fyi, the new Pioneer MKII is even more highly rated than the Sony SCD-XA5400ES:

Having listened to some players in the same pricerange as the PD-D9 (Marantz, Rotel, NAD) I must say that the Pioneer came clearly out on top, especially when listening to "heavier" music, such as The Downward Spiral by NIN. Here in Sweden you can find it for $900.

An update for anyone interested in acquiring this player. I've had it a few weeks now and I find it generally neutral across the frequency range, possibly erring on the warm side (no bda thing, in my book). Minor irritations: the display is difficult to read unless you view it head on and the discs take a while to read. Also, if you skip tracks it's slow to react, so you get a few seconds of the next track before the skip function kicks in.

Not perfect, but at £360 (discounted from around £600) it's a good buy.
