I've done a bunch of searches and can't find a link to Charles Rosen's performance of the Goldberg Variations on SACD. Can anyone confirm or deny if this SACD exists? If it does exist, can anyone point to a webpage describing the recording?

Thanks,

- Sam

Looks this SACD do not exist or is not in this Site databank.
I do not know this Charles Rosen's Vars performance, but personaly I feel the Goldberg Vars do not fit well for a piano performance, the Goldberg partiture are suited for a organ performance, not a piano one.
And the only Goldberg organ performance I like is the Gunther Rost on Oehms Classics OC-636 Bach: Goldberg Variations - Gunther Rost
This is a new arrangement, with a fast tempo, with only 44m54s, not the long, slow performance 74minutes. This is the only Goldberg performance I can listen to the end, this new fast tempo arrangement
turned the Goldberg Vars on a piece of easy listening music, a hit, you can listen the samples on JPC or Amazon links.
Regards,

Were you possibly thinking of Glenn Gould? Both recorded for Columbia/Sony, of course.

A Google search digs up this sentence, which was written for the Wikipedia article on SACD, but deleted later:

"in 2005 Sony Music Entertainment (Germany) GmbH released Charles Rosen's performance of the Goldberg Variations as a hybrid SACD with 16-bit PCM and DSD 5.1 surround but no DSD stereo)"

http://74.125.77.132/search?q=cache:9qGTRqzr034J:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CD+%22Charles+Rosen%22+goldberg+sacd&cd=9&hl=en&ct=clnk&client=opera

http://www.psaudio.com/ps/wiki/sacd/

This is either an error, or it was one of those strange limited edition releases for the german BMG music club, having no SACD stereo layer and a multichannel layer which was processed artificially from the stereo master.

Here's a discussion about these SACDs:

Hmm, looks like samboy deleted that sentence from Wikipedia.

Anyway, he's no longer interested in this thread. Read his user profile ...
