What interests me is: who are the distributors? Aren't those the labels themselves? A lot of artists have their own label but distribution deals with the major ones. I am really asking I do not want to sound snide. As far as I heard it the distribution is handled by the Majors themselves.
Does anybody know? And how come there has not been any rush of independent distributors as it has been by the labels?
There are indie distributors and they do significant sales. They are not necessarilly selling to the big three.
The retailers have a list of criteria that distributors must meet to sell them product. It doesn't matter if the retailers are buying socks, TVs or CDs. Indies some times cannot meet this criteria.
KOCH is the largest indie label/distributor. Sony/BMG is next. KOCH and Sony can sell to anyone. The demand for the product must be proven to the retailer. There must be some money spent on product placement, some support on the local level, and proven concert support. So for most indie artists, this is a deal dreaker, unless the indie is a former major label artist with a green tree.
