Kal You should be aware that US models are not suitable for Europe 230 volts 50 Hz

I am well aware of that.

Hi Kal, I notice in your excellent review of the Sony XA5400ES you connected it by its XLR or RCA outputs to the Parasound P7. However I feel many readers would like to know your opinion of it connected by HDMI to a receiver or amplifier for stereo CD.

You will have to draw inferences about that from other comments as I do not listen to CDs (or have any) at the weekend house where the MCH/HDMI setup is.

My experience is that for older CD's analogue interconnects are best and for the latest CD's HDMI

They still seem to be available in the US. I ordered one from MyDigitalUniverse.com for $1088.00 a couple weeks ago. It is really an excellent sounding 2 channel player at any price but unbelievable considering the price.

MyDigitalUniverse.com does not appear on the Sony website listing of authorized on-line dealers:

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ContentDisplayView?hideHeaderFooter=false&storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&cmsId=authorized_dealers.

If they told you they were an authorized dealer either Sony is mistaken, or, this company is willing to make that misrepresentation to make a sale. I don't know which it is, but it's worth verifying. Buying from non authorized dealers is never a good idea. Caveat Emptor. Sony is even more restrictive with es sales. In fact JR.com, an authorized es dealer, can't even give a price quote on es products either on-line or over the phone; you must go into the store.

All of the discussion about this unit being sold out outside the US has made me anxious about future availability, and I am thinking about acquiring one for a second system, even though I'm not ready yet to put the rest of it together. The Sony site - SonyStyle - advertises no payments no interest for 24 months - so even though one pays full list there are no payments for 2 years. Who knows, if enough buy this unit maybe Sony will think twice about their lack of support for the format.

TRY SONY STYLE HONG KONG

hi,

i am back from holidays in uk and france.

tried Sony Style HK as suggested, have stock, but priced higher than i am willing to stomach. so u.s. version is the way to go with voltage stepdown converter. hope this will not compromise sound in anyway.

on a side (rant) note... i was in france looking for the SCD-XA5400ES as well. not a good experience shopping there. tried asking for direction in Metro (train) information centre, being oriental and speaking english is not a good combination. the lady looked at me from top to toe, and reply in perfect French where i should go. she did not blink nor gives a top to toe "salute," when a teenager jumped the divider without paying to access the Metro. cool!!! when i cannot speak French i am a low-life compared with someone who breaks the law! similiar experience with the sony store there.

to be fair, not all French have the same attitude. just these particular experiences really spoil the image.

i did get the pricing info elsewhere: the asking price is euro 1850 in France and in stock (hk version is cheaper).

cheers,
wps
