The CSO disc is the worst performance of Daphnis I have ever heard. It is going to be a drink coaster in my household, albeit a very expensive one. Haitink is terrible and the Poulenc performance is awful. Both performances are DEAD and so impersonal they sound phoned in. The choral training is terrible, as in the Daphnis the coach has the choir OOOH in the final dance when the score calls for AAhhh... It DOES make a difference, as these should be cries of orgasmic ecstasy...

After navigating the terrible BSO website, I succeeded in getting this and the Brahms Requiem, both of which are GREAT!

The sound in MCH is excellent. I do not waste my time listening in 2channel when MCH is available.

My system in analog direct, Oppo BDP-83, 1,000 watts to all six channels (including subwoofer), and Polk SRS-SDA-1s all around the listening room. Yes, the bass can be frighteningly real...

The Haitink is being blasted everywhere, so it's an obvious clunker. This Levine is OK, but I have heard far better. To me it is just not in the same league performance-wise or sonically as the BSO Brahms Requiem.

I am curious...

Which Daphnis performance is your favorite? I do have the DVD-Audio EMI of Martinon, which is very good in stereo and surround, but I still think the Boulez NY Philharmonic on Sony is wonderful. Munch, of course, is still a favorite. The Mobile Fidelity of the Minnesota Orchestra recording that used to be on Vox is also very good.

About Haitink...

I have a buddy in Chicago who says going to CSO concerts when Haitink is conducting, especially Bruckner, is the most expensive nap he gets to take... UGH!!!

For all those who purchased digital music from the BSO Digital Music Store and experienced problems, I would like to offer a deal.

We are in the midst of re-developing the download functionality of the BSO Digital Music store. This will be a multi-phased project.

Over the course of the project, I would like to solicit the assistance of some beta testers. Testing will most likely begin some time in January 2010.

In exchange for the assistance of 20 people, I will offer a free copy of the BSO's next SACD release. Unfortunately, I cannot divulge what the album will be, but suffice it to say, you will get a copy.

For the first 20 people who email me with their contact info (Name, Phone and Email address), I will accord you this offer. Anyone who comes in after the first twenty people are secured, I will gladly accept your help but unfortunately I cannot offer you a free CD.

Please direct all inquiries BY EMAIL to Rich Bradway at the BSO (rbradway@bso.org).

Thank you for your help and patronage.

Performance-wise, I have been a big fan of the Dutoit/Montreal CD on Decca. I doubt anything can touch the Levine/BSO sonically.

Monteux!
Dutoit is quite bad actually. The Levine is good enough, but the magic is lacking.

I have an opportunity to order BSO two releases (this one & Brahms German Requiem)from my local dealer, but they are listed as RBCD. Please, someone "in the known", could you confirm these discs being a double inventory releases?

I was sorely disappointed with the famous Monteux. A very squeaky clean interpretation.
