I also own the LSO Live Beethoven Symphonies set and haven't noticed any problems when playing them, which I did frequently since their purchase.

I also want to chime in on the quality of the LSO Live releases - I have had 0 quality problems. I own 15 or 16 of the releases, with a few more on my wish list, and have had no issues. I echo Windsurfer's comments about a good job despite the recording venue - the Barbican is very wide and narrow. The Haitink Beethoven cycle is excellent (we have been fortunate in Beethoven symphony cycles on SACD, with Haitink, Vanska, and the Karajan, which has some real high spots). The Colin Davis recordings are excellent as well. Can't speak for the Gergiev or Rostropovich.

I have a boxed set of Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 (Haitink) on LSO Live. On three of the discs, my player won't read the SACD layer (it does read the CD layer). On the 9th symphony, in particular, the sound stage collapses and a lot of the music seems directed through one speaker. I find this on the 7th, too, but to a lesser degree.

Whilst I have some poorly recorded or mastered CD's, I don't have any SACD's as poor as this. I do have a couple of CD's that my player struggles with but they're old and much played. These are the only SACD's that present the problem. Does anyone else have this set and, if so, do they have concerns with the quality of it? I'm loathe to buy any other LSO Live SACD's based on this experience but the catalogue is compelling. I'd appreciate any insight.

To express this simply: there is nothing wrong with your discs ... your player cannot read the SACD layer properly.

Send the unit to service and if that does not help then get another (non high end) player that can read the discs reliably.

Steve:

I own 18 of their discs including the Haitink Beethoven box. I've had nary a problem.

Some of the recordings do sound a little flat compared to the best I've heard, but I've always attributed this to their recording live in a difficult venue. I've always found this slight problem more than offset by the wonderful performances they have captured!

I'd like to thank everyone for their replies, especially Chaz from LSO Live who immediately offered to replace the problem discs which, given that I've owned the discs for some time, isn't something I'd looked for.

To Esa, who says that the problem relates to my transport, I really don't think that's the case. The equipment has been back to factory for a service and update (no guarantee, I know, but the best I can do). These discs have been problematic since I owned them but I've enjoyed the CD layer and procrastinated in following up the SACD layer problem. I have a lot of CD's and SACD's but only 5 that consistently won't read.

I'd also like to stress that I did not intend to defame LSO Live, as suggested in one reply. I was looking to build confidence in buying more of their catalogue, which I've done, emphatically. If my approach was clumsy or offended the approach prevalent on this forum, I unreservedly apologise.

Steve
