I have a boxed set of Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 (Haitink) on LSO Live. On three of the discs, my player won't read the SACD layer (it does read the CD layer). On the 9th symphony, in particular, the sound stage collapses and a lot of the music seems directed through one speaker. I find this on the 7th, too, but to a lesser degree.

Whilst I have some poorly recorded or mastered CD's, I don't have any SACD's as poor as this. I do have a couple of CD's that my player struggles with but they're old and much played. These are the only SACD's that present the problem. Does anyone else have this set and, if so, do they have concerns with the quality of it? I'm loathe to buy any other LSO Live SACD's based on this experience but the catalogue is compelling. I'd appreciate any insight.

Steve,
Your situation is perplexing, to say the least. Usually disc read troubles are in the player, but you've got dcS. I have these discs, and have no difficulties, as you'd described. Maybe you have a bad disc.

The only LSO Live disc that I recall to have technical troubles was the Sibelius 3/7. But there can always be the odd one now and again.

I like the LSO Live discs, and have quite a few of them.

Steve

Dear Hamblis,
>> my player won't read the SACD layer >> This seems a regular CD or SACD layer full damaged in TOC area (Table of Content).

>> the sound stage collapses and a lot of the music seems directed through one speaker >> This seems fail in the SACD disc manufacturing process, many digital bits/ points are un-readable, but as your player is a DCS first class the DCS can recover part of the missing reading.
Please, inform me who made this discs ?
Near the central hole of the discs there is the name of the plant.
Regards, Alan
P.S.: I sugest you return this defective discs to the shop and get new ones, as this performances worth the pain.

I have this set of SACD's and have had no problems playing the SACD layer on my Marantz SA11-S2 player. In fact, I find these performances to be excellent and the sound terrific (2-channel).

Yes and no!

I think you've just been very unlucky; I have 15 of their releases and have no complaints on that score.

Thanks for your replies - much appreciated. Alan, the only words I can make out on the reverse of the disc near the hole are "Sony DADC". Otherwise, there are some code numbers but no other text that I can make out.

I will see if the supplier will agree to replacing the set.

Steve, not sure what the problem is but to start with we can send you some replacement discs directly. If you send me an email with your address we can get these out to you. My email address is chaz.jenkins@lso.co.uk

Why not just e-mail Chaz at LSO live? The guys there are very approachable and will surely put things right for you. Whilst understanding your frustration don't slag them off on a global website before they've had a chance to rectify things. For goodness sake don't start something rolling that ends up with LSO Live kicking Hybrid-SACD's into touch.

I have nearly all their recordings both red book and hybrid and NEVER ONCE had a problem and let's face it at the prices they charge we can afford to forgive them the odd glitch.

Make sure your SACD payer is working properly before casting aspersions on this fine label.

Long Live LSO Live!

Hired fox, I haven't "just" e-mailed Chaz at LSO Live because I didn't know to do so. I was also concerned that I've owned the set for a while and felt too much time had gone by to go back to the retailer. I've seen Chaz's post and will follow that up.

I don't believe I've "slagged them off" at all. I've explained my concern and asked for input on the only forum I'm aware of that might know the recordings and the inherent quality. My intention was the opposite of wanting to "slag them off". I'm actually trying to reassure myself that it's safe to buy more of their recordings. Until your post, I was very pleased at the courtesy and support of the responses.

As far as problems with my player are concerned, I was careful to explain that I do have a couple of CD's that aren't read by my transport but no SACD's other than the ones being discussed.

I have the set and was so impressed that I bought 2 more for Christmas gifts and can attest that all three sets are absolutely first rate.

I have a total of 28 of LSO's sacd releases and I am impressed by the fine quality of each and every one of them, taking into account the problematic acoustic they must work with. Some of the performances simply are not equaled elsewhere. Also their sound quality has improved over the past couple years to where these releases are competitive with anyone else.
