OK, just when you thought it couldn't get any more bizarre:

I just acquired a new Denon DVD-3910 (successor to the 2900). Tried the Rachmaninov disc, and after a long while booting up the TOC, it starts playing the stereo SACD layer (even though my machine is set to default to multi-channel), AND THE CLOCK STAYS PUT AT 00:00:00 WHILE IT'S PLAYING! Not wanting to jinx a new machine, I lept from my seat and removed it from the player(!)

There is definitely something weird about this disc - I'm returning this second copy today.

Two interesting developments:
I just purchased the MLP Rimsky-Korsakov disc and so far, no problems.
Second, I got an email from Decca saying they are looking into problems with the disc and will contact me when they have more info.

I'm glad to hear that the Rimsky-Korsakov disc works, because I was contemplating purchasing it but for my experience with the Rachmaninoff disc.

Also, I guess today was the day for Decca to read their email, because I got a similar reply to my query. Maybe a replacement disc is in the offing...? :-)

Mike,
I got a reply from Decca...they want me to send the disc to the UK to be tested. I don't see that I should have to do this, since I SERIOUSLY doubt the problem is with only my disc! Did you get a similar reply?

Yes, I did. I'm not sure yet what my response will be. Like you, I am skeptical that the problem is with a specific disc (or discs) and not the whole production run.

I have 7 of the MLP's (including the Rachmaninov) and they all play perfectly on both of my SACD players.

What manufacturer(s) are your SACD players? As this thread has noted, it seems to be a specific issue with the Denon series of players, the 2900 and, apparently, the 3910 (see Onebit's posting above).

That said, when I suggested the problem was with the "whole production run," I meant the production run of the MLP Rachmaninoff disc. Deathstroke previously confirmed that the problem does not manifest itself on the MLP Rimsky-Korsakov disc. I did not mean to impugn all of MLP's works; my apologies for the confusion.

Both are Sony's and are CD/SACD only. I had a hypothesis myself that the problem was with universal players trying to do too much and not with the discs, but others shot that down.

From the, "Now why didn't I think of that before?" files...

I recently (read: Thanksgiving weekend) picked up a Yamaha DVC6770 multi-disc player (plays CDs, DVDs, DVD-As, and SACDs), as an inexpensive back-up to my Denon DVD-2900. (Incidentally, the Yamaha is a darn good player, espeically for the money.)

After being reminded of the peculiar issues with the MLP Rachmaninoff disc by the email from Decca, I decided to take it for a spin in the Yamaha player, playing the multi-channel tracks that gave my Denon so many fits. The result: No playback issues whatsoever with the Yamaha.

So, now the question is whether I want to take this up with Denon. Since the MLP Rachmaninoff disc is so far the only disc I've had issues with, and only on the multi-channel layer at that, and considering the horror stories I've heard about Denon service, I think I'll just declare victory and go home, so to speak.

I got another email from Decca. They think there was a small defective batch from Hong Kong. I agreed to send my disc in for a replacement and they offered me another Mercury disc of my choosing!
