I got a copy of the Mercury Living Presence Rachmaninov SACD. I popped it into my Denon 2900 and....it skips like crazy on the multichannel track. The stereo SACD and CD layers are fine.
This is the first disc of any sort I've had problems with in my player. Has anyone had problems with this disc or other SACDs in the Denon 2900? I know it happens occaisonally on some players that discs just don't play correctly. Unfortunately I bought it online so I have to eat the return shipping costs for an exchange, and who knows if the replacement will work.

The Janis disc seems to be a troublesome one.
I've had 2 copies. First one would play only the cd layer on my Marantz 8260, and not every time. The second copy is a complete dud on the Marantz, but the cd layer works fine on my little cheapy portable. I gave the disc away.
Some times you win, some times you lose.
I have 200 sacds and this one is only one to not play.
It's possible that there are some quality troubles with this disc, but it's always hard to really know.

dear deathstroke, I've only experienced something similar with one disc on my denon 2900, a Vanguard SACD of Vaughan Williams. And that's a stereo-only disc. Have tried two copies thanks to a helpful web seller (who sent a free second copy), but second only slightly better than the first. Musically excellent, though. Otherwise, plain sailing.

Don't plan to get the Janis Rach. disc even though I used to have it on an LP, and loved it, as I'd like to get the new hyperion set (if I can get it on special on the web).

I have had no difficulties of this sort with the MLP Rach. 2&3 nor, in fact, with any other SACDs.( Fingers crossed!) My player is a Sony XA 777es.
Are Universal players such as the Denon more susceptible to this type of problem?

I've bought maybe 100 CDs in my life and only two have been troublesome. The first was the soundtrack to Star Wars: A New Hope, which didn't play at all. This is the second one. I am getting a replacement and will hope for the best.

Problems of players reading the TOC on a disc are usually just random occurrances either with the disc or the player. When it happens repeatedly with the player there's usually a problem with the player and the transport/laser needs to be replaced.
Problems with discs are fairly unusual. However, with 2 dud copies of the same disc, and a few posts by others of troubles with the same disc, there could be a noticeable trend, however it's really difficult to know. I'm sure it's still a small number in the overall larger number of the disc production.
Good as the Janis disc is, at least there are a lot of other Rach 3's to listen to.

Do you have any other Mercury Living Presence SACDs? I want the upcoming Rimsky-Korsakov one, but now will probably buy it locally in Tower Records just in case it's a dud too.

I have all 10 MLP SA-CDs (thanks to a mate in Universal) and the only disc I've had a problem with is disc 1 of the Bach/Starker set. I had a devil of a time getting it out of the case though and I suspect the problem is of my own doing.

In general, if a disc loads but play is erratic, this could well be a laser alignment problem. Most players have a sequence to perform self-alignment. Sometimes this is by powering on the player with a (good) disc in the tray, sometimes there's a button sequence to initiate this. If you can figure it out, it may save a trip to the service centre. I had one bad disc a while ago which threw my player out of alignment and the problem started to manifest itself on previously good discs. I did an alignment and the player has been fine since. Though I do now have a couple of Living Stereo discs which my player "Can't Rd" which I plan to send to Philips for investigation.

I wonder if anyone has tried the trick of using car wax on an SACD? As readers probably know, this can often "fix" a scratched CDA. If it were an old disc that recently started misbehaving, I might try it as a last resort. However, a new disc should be the manufacturer's problem, if indeed it is the disc that's malfunctioning. Testing it on other players would confirm that.

I have 5 or 6 other MLP's. Disc 1 of the Starker set didn't go the very first time in, but no troubles since. The others have all been perfect.
Buying at the local Tower is indeed a good idea with these as it's easy to do a return.
