Super jewel cases are quite a bit more expensive than the regular jewel cases, and obviously the disc costs more than a regular CD does. Anything that can be saved is a bonus. Digipaks are even more prohibitive to manufacture too. Although many prefer the digipaks/slipcases etc, these can create problems with refurbishment issues when shops return them for credit. Stores such as HMV and the like don't pack stuff up that well, so returned stock has to be stripped etc.... digipaks cost way more than a jewel case to produce, and it isn't cost effective to keep a whole heap of them in stock "just in case" either. Also, a lot of retail outlets frown upon this kind of packaging as it doesn't fit in the shelves/displays that well.

You can imagine what sort of mess we'd be in with digital disc formats if there had been no agreement on standardisation from the start, if a packaging format cannot be agreed and adhered to cost or no cost. If Pentatone can do it properly so can all the others. Even so Super Jewel boxes are still cheap enough when bought in bulk to replace any other box that your SACD arrives in. I cannot imagine that anybody buying SACD machines and discs is so hard up that a little extra investment to harmonise one's collection will be seen as prohibitive. The manufactures should have more confidence in their market. It is a niche but not a poverty stricken one for sure, at least not yet

Channel Classics issue some in Super Jewel Boxes and others in digipacks. BIS mix up plain and super jewel boxes on their SACD releases. Can be frustrating but as said above if that is a small price to pay for at labels keeping the SACD format, all power to them.

I like the Super Jewel Box and see it as part of the offer of superior quality for SACD's. If any arrive in standard cases, I swop them over so that my shelves have a consistency of presentation which has all sorts of advantages..

With all due respect, we at BIS do NOT mix up plain and super jewel boxes for our SACD:s.
The only time we use a plain jewel box is when we sell the product in a slip-case, which totally covers the jewel box.

Thanks for this, of course you are right I checked my collection and it is so. Subtle but not one I spotted.
