The results of my attempt to discover from Telarc if there are plans for Zander to record the Mahler 2nd, 7th, or 8th symphonies, completing the cycle, has been a bit of an adventure:

My original e-mail:
Will the Mahler Symphonies not yet released in the Zander/Philharmonia Orchestra series (2nd, 7th and 8th symphonies) be recorded and released on SACD? If yes, what is the approximate timetable? Thank you.

Telarc's reply:
We appreciate your interest in Concord Music Group. Yes, there will be an SACD version of the album mentioned. Unfortunately, we are having difficulty getting the finished product from our manufacturer. The original release date is February 24, but may be pushed back until March 24. We should know for sure by this coming Friday. If you’d like to shoot me an email then I can let you know.

I "shot" him this reply:
Thanks for the reply. I mentioned three different symphonies (2, 7 and 8). Which one is being released on February 24th? And the other two, will they also be recorded and released as SACD? If yes, about when can we expect them? Thanks.

Telarc's reply to my reply (different person):
Symphony No. 5 will be released next month. In reference to the others, there is nothing on the release schedule.

My reply:
Again, thanks for the reply, however, the SACD of the Mahler Symphony No. 5th has been available since 2001, and is already in my collection.
My question is about the Mahler 2nd, 7th and 8th symphonies. Has or will Mr. Zander recorded them? If yes, which ones and when will they be released as SACDs? If no, are there any plans to record and release them on SACD at all? If yes, approximately when? Thanks.

As a back up, my original e-mail was also sent to www.benjaminzander.com on the assumption that if anyone knows, he will. No reply yet. I'll keep you posted.

This person was probably referring to Zander's upcoming Bruckner 5. Overall that's a bizarre email exchange. You'd think they would know their own material better. Here's hoping you get a reply with some answers.

Telarc today isn't the Telarc we've known for years. Out of the 51 original Telarc employees working there when Concord Music bought them a few years back, 26 have been let go, with more yet to leave. I have it from "reliable sources" that new SACD's from Telarc will be scarce to non-existent. Look for material on an as yet to be released label called "Sonarc," which is a joint effort of several former Telarc key people.

And, if you want a truly spectacular Mahler 2nd, try the Telarc remastered SACD of the original Soundstream recording by Leonard Slatkin, with Kathleen Battle as the soprano. Classics Today gave it a "10/10" rating, and I concur: the sound is infinitely superior to the CD released many years go, and is nothing less than a stellar performance all around.

I share your admiration for the Slatkin. I purchased the original CD release, which was packaged in two separate jewel boxes in a black, leather-like slip case. This, of course, has been replaced with the remastered SACD Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Slatkin. As a treasured part of my collection for many years, I second your enthusiastic recommendation.

Your right about the Bruckner. Here's the latest reply from Telarc:

"Bruckner Symphony No. 5 is being released in March. Mahler No. 2 is on the recording schedule but no other information is available at this time."

No reply from Zander's site yet, but note that he will lead a March 24th performance at Westminster Cathedral with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Bach Choir and soloists Sylvia Schwartz (sop) and Sarah Connolly (mez), so the recording shouldn’t be too far off.

Any UK friends attending the concert?

Hi Patrick

You may be interested in hearing Zander conduct the Mahler 2 with the Boston Phil at Symphony Hall on March 11. Should be a great show!

For those interested in the Mahler 2 recording - I am a member of the Bach Choir and sang last night in the Westminster Cathedral concert referred to in this thread.

I can confirm that we are recording it this coming Sunday (29th March) but I am afraid I can't give you any details of the release date.

It was a fabulous concert, though of course I am biased!

Thank you very much Juliet (Jools)! Wicked to have a discussion contribution from someone who performs in a world-class ensemble.

Please post again if you learn any release details.

I was looking at these posts from 2009. I received an email today (June 8, 2012) from Ben Zander's office saying that he recorded the Mahler 2nd this past January with the London Philharmonia and Telarc will be releasing it later in 2012. Hard to say what this means in relation to the information contained elsewhere in this thread, but, anyway, it is an update from an official source. No word on whether or not it will be in SACD format. I am quite looking forward to hearing it, if it ever truly does see the light of day. Note: one friend of mine in London said he thinks the discussion disc Zander likes to do was recorded this year and the performance disc was recorded previously, so maybe that would dovetail with the prior posts. This may be speculative, however.
