I've been reading "Gramophone" since 1983 and can't count the number of times they've done a lavish, glowing cover story on an artist, only to give a rather poor review of their current offering. Welcome to the club, Julia, you've been officially "Gramophoned".

Not pertaining to Gramophone but to Julia and PentaTone, she was on the internet via Bavarian Radio Thursday night or Friday playing the Prokofiev #1 with Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra. During intermission, (realize my German is almost non-existent) it appeared that she said she was sorry to feel compelled to leave PentaTone, but that she had felt frustrated that their recordings seem to encounter "distribution problems".

This is consistent with my observations locally. Few people know her who have not been told about her directly by myself and those same few who know anything about her know of the existence of SACD because they have visited me and listened to the system, or had to listen to me go on and on about it.

The local Barnes and Noble booksellers which is the local remaining source of classical recordings has one PentaTone SACD.

While in Manhatten yesterday, I visited two Borders bookstores and although I was fortunate enough to find the Chailly/Concertgebouw Mahler 3rd at one of them, the selection of SACD's was indeed thin. Online is really the only place (is online a place?) left to purchase SACDs.

I already started a thread on this topic a while ago, but agree with what you say.

Of course she was always teamed up with Yakov Kreizburg and the Netherlands Philharmonic in her Pentatone recordings. I have bought them all. I have seen Julia perform twice with Kreizburg - with the Bournemouth Symphony in UK - and they are magical together. It's a great, great shame that she has left Pentatone and Kreizburg and of course the SACD format. I hope he doesn't follow because his leadership of the NPO surpasses even Jansons and the RCO at times; the Dutch are fortunate indeed to have two world class ensembles playing in their capital city.

Next time you're in Manhattan, check out J&R. Their classical department has hundreds of SACD titles and the prices are the best in the city.

I've seen this disc selling for $9.99USD. Decca, it seems, is already getting desperate to ensure they can claim this release as a "success".
