This is to comment about the releases of Sacds by Sony Classical in the UK market. I have perused the 'New Releases' section of the GRAMOPHONE magazine from January to October 2004, and found that there were only 5 Sacds released by Sony Classical during this period. Moreover, all these 5 Sacds were listed in the March 2004 issue. Sony is the main promoter of Sacd, and one wonder's what impression this dismal performance will portray ? A couple of months back I had emailed Sony Classical, UK, on this subject but got no reply. Even smaller companies have issued more classical Sacds during this period !

If you look at the number of releases in total by each label (someone Stephen's site allows one to do easily-he has the info there, conveniently, in the label section)-Sony is still the number one SACD label, by a wide margin. Telarc is number two. It is true that Sony's releases have slowed to a trickle-different divisions within Sony (and now a merger on Sony Music with BMG) and there are rumors that the flood of early releases was due to subsidies from one group to another to kickstart SACD. But, you know, the majors are not really the majors anymore, at least in classical music. Classical releases have become increasingly dominated by labels like Naxos, Hyperion, Chandos, Bis, Harmonia Mundi, Telarc, and labels like LSO Live. The majors are living mostly on their catalogs-some really interesting stuff, and we need to encourage them to release more on SACD-but new releases in general are fewer and fewer. The activity of SACD-only labels like Pentatone and Channel is increasingly important to the classics-loving audiophile.

Well, it's not like Sony Classical published a lot of new recordings this year in any format...

Still, I would hav bought Perahia's Schubert sonatas in SACD, but they never materialized.

Does any one know how the manufacturing capacitys for SA-CD are at the moment. Maybe they are still to low and Sony Music, after having kicked SA-CD of, is now deliberately holding back so that new labels can continuously join the SA-CD group ?
