Hello,

You may be laughing at me, but I tried to play some SACD disks (which I received as gifts) on the following equipment:
Pioneer DV 600 player
Kenwood KRF-V5070D receiver
Magnat Monitor 990 speakers

My problem is that I hear NO difference between the normal CD layer and the stereo SACD layer of the disks (which contain classical music). I know these components are "cheap", but I cannot spend more money on this (I am an employee in Eastern Europe).

Do you think it is normal that the SACD layer does not sound any better when played on the above machines? I expected to hear a clear difference. Was I wrong??? Thanks!

Dear AMATEUR,
With my Stereo only SONY SCD-1 player the SACD difference is clearly audible, even with oldie 70's Rock SACDs, maybe you have to listen a SACD recorded in analog or PCM and
the sound was less good than a SACD recorded in DSD or DXD. I think the 'problem' is in your HT Receiver pre-amp:
-- Some pre-amp settings or ...
-- The usual DSP processor (AC3,DolbyDigital,MPEG etc) could have moulding your SACD output signal in a HT movie standard sound.
-- Also check your Pioneer DV600 for some output filter option: My SONY have five output filters options for CD and two for SACDs, the CD Filter using Sharp Roll-Off output filter is the worst of all 5 filters,
because it have the usual Pre/Post Ringing effect.

I suggest you remove the Kenwood HT Receiver and listen a few days with a regular Stereo amp and two regular Stereo speaker (non HT speakers) as a test.
Clearly the problem is not your ears, but the hardware or how you use it, the difference is huge and audible by all people.
Good luck and Happy 2009...

Dear All,

I really appreciate your reply! I did not expect anyone would give me so many hints. From your reaction I concluded that the error is somewhere in "me" or the equipment settings.
So, I am thinking about borrowing a stereo amplifier to see if there is a difference. Although Kenwood customer service replied that the receiver does not modify the analog input signal (in stereo mode) I am not convinced that this is true.
I am also thankful for the link about two-channel SACD. I will read it through a couple more times.

Happy New Year to all!
