Anyway my fake mini-concert hall sounds very realistic to me.

Have you tried multichannel DSD in your living room?

I think I see where you are going, but isn't my room working in concert with the ambient cues from the recordings? Anyway my fake mini-concert hall sounds very realistic to me.

Yes but that dilutes the real ambiance as well as distorting it. My favorite relevant anecdote is switching from the mch to the stereo track at the end of one of the Britten Cello Sonatas (Wispelwey/Channel) to discover that the reverberation decayed AWAY from me to behind the front speakers and not around/past me as it would in a real space. (BTW, if you have a really reverberant room to simulate the spatial aspects of the decay, it completely subsumes the real ambiance.) Stereo is great but there's better.

Of course, I voted in favor of hi-rez multi-channel but could not believe the opinions of some of the voters: "Two Ears. Two Channels....enuf for me." Don't people realize that just as the eyes are blessed with peripheral vision, the ears are capable of discerning sound from multiple directions...including overhead.

Off Topic:

I just got an Onkyo 705 receiver and was wondering if you might could provide me with your favorite settings for 5.1 listening.

I would have sent you a personal message but did not see that option.

Regards,

Alan

Interesting result. 45% of respondents are committed or very interested. Eliminate the "I don't care" which is an ambiguous response, at best, when there are also options for "slight interest" and "do not like" and the proportion rises to 50%!

I hope that JA takes this under serious consideration.
