There is a very interesting article on this work by David Fanning at http://www.americansymphony.org/dialogues_extensions/2002_03season/2003_4_11/popov.cfm
It may excite you, and it certainly makes a change from yet another Shostakovich symphony!

There is nothing wrong with more Shostakovich symphonies! :P

Chances of EMI Classics releasing Jansons' upcoming Shostakovich 4th on SA-CD: none.

I did not say that there was anything wrong with more Shostakovich symphonies. I am sure that in due course we shall have all 15 on SACD.
However, Telarc are to be congratulated in issuing a SACD of the music one of his lesser known contemporaries in what we hope will be a worthy recording.

I agree castor
I hope Naxos will release their Tischenko Symphony 7 on SACD. Anyway I'll be buying this for sure and will post!
Cheers

PS some Vainberg and Miaskovsky (I'm listening to his magnificent cello concerto as I type)would be nice as well!

Speaking of Shostakovich, anyone know if Capricco is still planning on a complete Shostakovich Symphony series? I really like the Eighth they did.

dear tailspin, do you mean the one on Cappriccio with the Cologne orchestra? I think that the sound is really exciting but that the performance wanders about a bit, and doesn't have the excitement and coherence of my favourite cd version, the Mravinsky on Philips. Can people tell me what they think of the Gergeiv recordings of the Shost symphonies? I see them advertised on the web, but haven't been able to hear any yet. The reviews posted on this site seem to represent divided opinion.
