Does anyone have any info on this conductor in this music? I am looking for a DSD Pictures and one that is exciting! Any thoughts about this one?

I don't know too much about him other than he's the son of Carlo Ponti and Sofia Loren. I haven't heard the Pentatone recording yet, but the Cincinnati/Jarvi "Pictures" on Telarc is a DSD recording and is very good. Although a "Soundstream" not a DSD recording, the Telarc SACD release (stereo only) of the Cleveland/Maazel "Pictures" is my favorite performance; it's exciting and the sound is great.

At least it is on Pentatone so sound quality should be exemplary but there are so many Pictures so 'yawn' and it was only ever written as a tongue in cheek fun poke. Not really serious music then?

Irrespective of how it may have been written, some very esteemed conductors have found it worth programming and even recording. Then too it has found favor with magazine critics hi-fi and otherwise. It certainly is generally accessible and often used as an introduction to classical music. Worthwhile certainly. Did we need a "Carlo Ponti" recording of it?
I would say that remains to be seen! I won't hold my breath, but I have an open mind.
All this not-with-standing: There are several other works I would rather have seen in its place: Someone's fabulous take on the Nielsen symphonies Numbers 1 and 3 for starters. and so on. You all have seen my list.
But I am going to purchase this and hope the young Ponti supercedes his father to become "THE" Carlo Ponti in the next few years!
Something to contemplate: Julia Fischer's last PentaTone recordings will be of the complete Schubert works for piano and violin. Will they sell as well as this recording?
Had her last recording for them been of the Bartok violin concertos with the OSR under Janowski, would it have sold as well as this one will?
Those who heard the internet broadcast of her April 15, 2008 concert in Victoria Hall, Geneva, will know that this was the Bartok Violin performance "to die for", but the public attitude toward Bartok being what it is: Would even that passionate, revelatory, fantastic and astonishing performance, had it been recorded, have sold as well as this Mussorgsky recording will probably do?
These guys have to make money to stay in business you know!

I attended a concert yesterday where the Shostakovich second piano trio was peformed. While, "Pictures" may not be quite as serious a piece of music, it, like the music of the much maligned Tchaikovsky, is serious enough, better than it's detractor's say, and more than worth your time to hear and your money to purchase a copy of.

I just received and finished playing this disc. The main problem is the extremely excellent competition that it is up against. Some examples of these are Jarvi/Cincinnati on Telarc multi-channel sacd and Reiner/Chicago on RCA living stereo, 3 channel sacd. On a slightly lower rung, in my opinion, are Neeme Jarvi/Chicago cd on Chandos and Maazel/Cleveland Telarc 2 channel sacd. Regarding the Ponti/ Russian National, there is nothing wrong with the performance or the recording EXCEPT it doesn't compare well to the best available. If you are a "newbie" either the above mentioned Jarvi or Reiner are the ones to own, in my opinion. If you are familiar with this music and, as i do, own several versions, you can afford to skip this disc. There is nothing new.
