"This can handle Super Audio CD (SA-CD), allowing the JS1 to record, edit and play music at SA-CD quality, and even upgrade older recordings to the new standard.

Sound Reality can up-convert conventional CD-quality music into uncompressed Direct Stream Digital (DSD) format. Using the pre-installed SonicStage Mastering Studio software, the DSD signal can be re-mastered into 5.1 Super Audio CD, revitalising the original."

Hmmm.....

Xmas cant come quick enough.Though there are more questions than answers?.

heavens above. so i could play 5.1 soundfiles from my computer through my speakers if it was this new Vaio?!

i wonder what interconnect set-up would be needed?

Now all we need is an SACD burner!

When they mention "Optical: DVD±RW/±R DL/RAM" surely they're talking about a DVD writer drive, not a reader drive? In that case it can record DSD Discs..

If so, it would be the first drive to combine DVD recording with SACD playback. Neither Sony nor Philips (or Pioneer for that matter) ever made one before.

It is anyway the first ever consumer PC to support SACD playback.

looks like I will be setting up my SACD music server soon...

On of the pictures on http://presscentre.sony.eu/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=296&NewsAreaID=2 shows a BD-R disc inserted into the drive. It doesn't guarantee anything but it suggests at least BD-R playback and even BD recording. That makes this an even more special drive than the PS3's!

When I read the part of the sentence that said "the DSD signal can be re-mastered into 5.1 Super Audio CD" I interpreted that to mean you could burn an SA-CD that would be playable in an SA-CD player. Am I off base here? Thanks.

We need some more detail from Sony here. There's no such thing as a SACD-R, at least not available to consumers. There is the DSD Disc which you can record on a DVD±R (see http://www.ps3sacd.com/dsddiscguide.html) but
a) this format supports stereo DSD only
b) DSD discs you can play on some PCs and any PS3 but not on regular SACD players.
Can DSD disc sustain 5.1 all of a sudden? Can the 5.1 signal be recorded on HDD only? ...
