hi,
Another excellent performance with a genuine recording is Yoel Levi with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Eng. M.Bishop on TELARC. Absolutely fantastic !!!!!! although CD. Just try La Cabane sur des pattes de poule and La Grande Porte de Kiev. Sorry but Rene Leibowitz/Royal Philharmonic performance is considerably inferior (sonically) vs all versions mentioned and sound is very distant to a live performance.

I own that disc also ( I said that I was a "sucker" for Pictures. ) It is also very good as is Oue/Minnesota on Reference and many others. In my opinion, they are all over-shadowed by Jarvi/Cincinnati and Reiner/Chicago

I own the Levi/Atlanta disc too. ( I said that I was a "sucker" for Pictures. ) It is very good as are many others such as Oue/Minnesota on Reference. However, they are over-shadowed, in my opinion, by Reiner/Chicago and, now, Jarvi/Cincinnati.

Sorry about the double-post. I tried to delete but, it seems, that is not allowed.

I have it on an out of print Japanese CD release. I can burn you a copy if you want it.

I recently – that is, two days ago – became aware of the Leibowitz recording of “Pictures at an Exhibition” and “Night on Bare/Bald Mountain.” On the web, I have seen raves about both the performance and the superb engineering. And, as if to confirm the plaudits, an excerpt on YouTube blew my socks off, even with the less than outstanding speakers I have attached to my computer.

I see that you have a Japanese CD of this performance and back in October you were willing to make a copy for Steve Steckel.

Would you be willing to burn a copy for me? If so, what would it cost? Is there anything I might have that I could burn for you in exchange?

I also own the Maazel/Cleveland sacd and I agree that it is VERY good but, it is over-shadowed, in my opinion, by both Jarvi/Cincinnati and Reiner/Chicago.

I also have the Reiner/Chicago. A wonderful recording of a great performance.

I only now spotted this thread, and while it's a bit old, I still wanted to post my opinions on this disc. When it was first released, I thought, "Who needs another "Pictures at an Exhibition?" I too have the Maazel recording (both the CD, and the superior remastered SACD), as well as several other recordings, including the Levi. I gave in and bought the Jarvi disc, and once it started to play, I simply marveled at it in its entirety. It is the BEST recording, and performance, of both pieces I've ever heard. To top that off, I think it's Telarc's finest SACD as well, not small praise as older SACD's from Telarc were quite good too. Newer Telarc discs disappointed me with their overly lush, and decidedly UN-detailed sound, but this Mussorgsky/Ravel disc simply shines all over the place!
