From the official Nick Drake website www.brytermusic.com, the new SACD is in hybrid 5.1 surround format:
September 27th, 2004 sees the release of a new Compilation of Nick Drake songs called ‘A Treasury’. This will replace the 1994 release ‘Way To Blue’
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Nick’s legacy has been untainted by the constant re-issue of his songs. Island founder Chris Blackwell resisted any attempt at compiling songs from his studio albums until the release of the short-lived ‘Heaven In A Wildflower’ album in 1985, preferring to keep his low-selling three albums constantly on catalogue.
The wish to spread Nick’s music to a wider audience dictated the need for a single CD selection that could act as a ‘taster’. ‘Way To Blue – An Introduction To Nick Drake’ became a hugely successful worldwide release that also spawned a whole series of ‘Introductions To:’ releases by other artists. Though it was compiled by Nick’s producer Joe Boyd, the series was launched by Art Director Cally at Island Records, originally as a series hoping to focus attention on Nick, John Martyn, Sandy Denny and John Cale, artists who couldn’t merit the title ‘Greatest Hits’ (they had none) but all of whom needed a quick and easy way in to their music. This series went on to dwarf these initial 5 titles so it has been decided to revisit the idea of a Nick Drake compilation.
Nick’s original producer and engineer, John Wood, has remixed and remastered all the songs as 5.1 surround versions and the release (on SACD) also comes with the original stereo remastered versions so that it is playable on any CD player.
The selection of songs fully reflects the many facets of Nick’s music opening with ‘Introduction’ an instrumental Nick was particularly proud of. It includes all of his best-known material, the many songs that have appeared in film and on TV, plus his two recent single releases: ‘Magic’ and ‘River Man’.
The compilation is available on SACD and as a single vinyl edition. The UK CD version has a special added treat as a ‘thankyou’ to all the fans, old and new, who may have bought the older compilation but who may want this new one as well!
Fans outside Britain may want to keep their eyes open on the Apple iTunes sight for a similar treat.

I am extremely excited and happy to know of this release. Unfortunately, over here in the states we won't be seeing the release until the end of October so my patience is certainly being tested. I, like I assume many others, would have much preferred to have all of his three original albums in SACD format. Beggars, however can not be choosers, so I will gladly look forward to acquiring this disc with the hopes of uncovering even more nuances and clarity to the music I have loved and enjoyed for 30 years.

Should we take this to mean there is no stereo SACD/DSD mix on the SACD layer of the Nick Drake SACD?
I just got an SACD player, and it plays multichannel, but I had assumed all hybrid SACDs would contain a *stereo* SACD/DSD version. I'm not at all interested in five-channel, but I do like the SACD sound so far (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Michael Tilson Thomas' Mahler).
Does anyone know whether discs marked "hybrid multichannel" will also include stereo SACD/DSD? There are so many I want to buy (Elton John, Steely Dan, Roxy Music), but I really don't have room for five speakers. And I like the sound enough in two-channel.

No matter what, there's always a stereo SACD track available!
These are the available formats:
Single Stereo - Stereo SACD only
Hybrid Stereo - Stereo SACD + CD track
Single Multichannel - Multichannel SACD + Stereo SACD
Hybrid Multichannel - Multichannel SACD + Stereo SACD + CD track
I have the Nick Drake's "A Treasury" and Roxy Music's "Avalon" and they are both Hybrid Multichannel.
Buy a multichannel system, believe me it's worth it!!!
Beck's "Sea Change" is a brilliant example of multichannel mixing. Fantastic!!!

You were right, all of you. There *is* a stereo SACD layer.

The disc is a multi layer the three layers are:
SACD 5.1 Surround version; As re-mixed in Nashville
SACD DSD Stereo version as originally mixed but re-mastered from the
original tapes.
PCM 16 Bit Stereo Version as previously mastered from original tapes.

Can you describe what kind of music he plays? This may show huge ignorance on my part, but I never heard of Drake before his stuff was reissued on SACD.

HMV in the UK have this disk on special at the moment on their website. You'll have to search, but it's a good deal. One of the cheapest SACDs out there.
No connection to HMV or any other retailer, BTW.
