Finally I am very fortunate in being able to compare my speakers to live sound with the designer on hand to make adjustment if necessary . Also my speakers have been built & room voiced to suit my listening room, I am not interested in comparing them with other speakers there is no need to. I believe I have as the late Peter Walker's ad slogan 'Closest approach to the original sound'

Okay, you brought an orchestra, band, single instrument into your house and got your speakers tweaked!!! It's pretty obvious what you believe.

You use comparitive terms without doing any comparisons. You simply state that your system is neutral and the best. A lot of people do that, but I doubt the music sounds the same in each of those audio systems. Of course everyone is right. However, everyone's "neutral" and "best" is different.

Correction: I have never said my system is the best only that it is neutral, why on earth would I want to do comparisons with other speakers just because you say I should ?

You have written the word "best" numerous times in conjunction with your opinion on the Sony player and the partnered receiver, as well as writing that you have the best possible multichannel sound.

I would think you would know how to judge, compare, and/or evaluate an audio system, but apparently not. You keep referring to speaker comparisons (your words not mine) as if that's all there is to it. I think not.

All I have done is to try to elicit how you determined that your system is "neutral" in sound character. And I don't think you are capable of stating anything more than you've already written. And alas it doesn't really matter very much.

You are being deliberately devisive, I have never said my speakers are the best only that the Sony combo is the best value . A comparison with other speakers is a totally pointless excercise. My speakers are neutral in my opinion because they do not show up the Sony player as sounding bright, Teresa has jumped to the conclusion that my system sounds dull,my speakers have been compared with the real thing live sound there is no better test. This subject has now become boring and as you say it does'nt really matter.

Dear DB,
Do you have trouble comprehending the words I write? You seem to. And while I may not be the best writer, I thought I wrote unambiguously. However, whenever I write audio system, you seem to understand only "speaker". I have written that you use comparitive terms in your writing without mention of comparing anything, and you come back thinking that I am suggesting that I wish you to compare speakers. Whenever I write system, you understand it to be speaker. You are truly NOT understanding what I am writing.
I would have thought that someone with as much experience in the field of audio that you profess to have, would understand what an audio system consists of, and what affects the sound of such.

You now write that your system is neutral because it does not show the Sony XA5400ES player as sounding bright. Well, that's more an outcome of total system synergy and the balance of non-neutral components into some kind of null state, NOT a neutral sounding source player.

BTW, nothing devisive in my writing, just trying to find out where you are coming from in your writing, opinions, etc.

have u tried Marantz Pearl instead? hiredfox seems to like that unit. or the oppo 83se, many seems to rate it higher than the sa8003.

before dumping the sony, the run-in time should exceed 500 hours. also, change the cheap power cable to something decent.

wps

I have not tried the Marantz Pearl. I had about 1000-2000 hours on the Sony so break-in wasn't the issue.

I would say the Sony has better tone quality than the Marantz SA8003 - it just has slightly too much bite on the highs for my taste. It is a superb sounding player though.

To each his own.

thanks for the reply. although i own xa5400es, if i am looking for a new player, i will give oppo 83se a hard look before considering Marantz sa8003 or Sony. i am not dissing sa8003, but rather to boarden the selection choices. :)

to access MCH in xa5400es, i want a HDMI AV-amp w DSD - in Malaysia it is really difficult and price prohibitive. eventhough Yamaha, Pioneer, Onkyo, Sony, etc. manufacture their AV amps in Malaysia! :(

but, yeah, to each his own.

wps

Does anyone know, how the scd-xa5400es converts plain redbook CDs to analog? I have read a rather confusing white paper on the matter, which describes a convertion to a 1 bit bitsream first (something like PCM->DSD) and then using the same DAC both for PCM and DSD. I also had a look at the service manual and it appears that the PCM signal path disappears pretty soon in the schematic, after having been fed to a custom chip named CXD9927R.

Does this mean that the player first converts PCM to DSD and then to analog?

Also, the white paper describes the usage of a multi-level DAC, like the scd-xa9000es had. Where would this be located? Certainly not on the DSD1796. Maybe on the CXD9927R?
