I visited the SONY Style store in Seattle today and asked to see the ES 5400 SACD player. None of the store clerks seemed to know what I was talking about. They had a VAIO computer on display, and I used it to show them the listing for the unit on the Crutchfield web site. Then they comprehended the problem but admitted that they didn't have a unit on display.

You may recall that I could only get 44.1 from the Sony via the HD621 into my 861 and that, until recently, the HD621 would not upsample that 44.1 signal. After sending a number of emails to all and sundry at M, I cornered Richard Hollinshead at CES and made sure he understood the nature of the problem. He assured me he would look into it when he returned to the UK.
This morning, I got an email saying that they had solved the problem with new firmware for the HD621. Originally, the HD621 would evoke only 44.1 when presented with an SACD disc but exactly what rules the HD621 used for it would depend on how the player tags the HDMI stream. A new HD621 software version puts SACD on a similar footing to other sources.
I expect to have this soon and will report on its (expected) success.

Did you sell it already? Your player is not on Audiogon, as I just checked. I'm not interested, but I know someone who might be, so had a look.

Hi, you've surprised me I'll check what's gone wrong.

I decided that for my tastes and my setup the analog outs of this player are just a tad bright sounding, so I decided to try a Marantz SA8003. So far I like it better - the highs are smoother and easier on the ears.
If anyone is interested in buying my XA5400ES, email me at wetmorer@hotmail.com
