Sorry Cherubino, how do you know that the warranty is 5 years?

I have unsuccessfully tried to register my Sony SCD-XA5400ES on the Sony-europe web site http://mysony.sony-europe.com/MySony. I was not able to register this product, because it is not available in the list of Super Audio CD player (where I can find only the XA9000ES and some cheaper models). Being unavailable to pick the right model, I was not able to fill the serial number and date of purchase fields.
I don't understand if the registration is necessary for the warranty...

BTW, the retail who sent me the unit, at the phone told me that the Sony Europe
warranty is 2 years, but I never read that anywhere.

hi Tino,

r u planning to mod yr XA5400ES?

thanks,
wps

Having played the Sony for a few months now, I am a tad disappointed in it's performance overall. For me it has a real weakness in its inability to make full sense of congested orchestral passages of large scale works. Super on chamber music and simpler arrays of instruments. In fairness it costs only (!) £1k so to a certain extent it has to be a budget player at heart. On the other hand, I've not heard anything at 2 x this price sound anywhere near as good.

Does anybody have first hand experience of the Meitner one-box?

oops! my friend did a review of the Sony, and might not match with what u said in terms of congested orchestral passages:

http://desirableaudio.blogspot.com/2009/07/sonys-sacd-swan-song-sony-xa5400es.html

as an example, when he played track 6 from "Macross Plus For Fans Only" soundtrack (http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/561122) in his system, i could clearly "see" each instrument's location, with plenty of space in between! no congestion at all. i have it broken-in for less than 30 hours before he did the review.

cheers,
wps

Interesting. I've had mine since October and cannot find a single sonic shortcoming with it. Are you using the stereo analog outs or via HDMI?

Stereo only. Regrettably, I do not have MCH capability.

Just for the record it has an admirably neutral character and seems to deliver the full dynamic range available from (some) discs, which as we have discussed before can put a strain on comfortable domestic listening.

no problem.

in that review, it mention the minute detail is not as apparent as his Marantz CD7, hence the reason why i ask Tino of his possible mod.

even with a mod, my system is not yet able to notice those minute details unlike his (much) higher-end setup, haa! another possibility is the review unit has not have enough break-in time.

at the moment i have only reached 170hours of break-in. the sound starts to open up, but ever so slowly.

do check out the recent discussion over at audiogon:

Hi junchoon, sorry for my delay, but I'm on holiday :)
As I already wrote in the Audiogon 3d, after two months of use, I'm not completely satisfied by this player, in particular I can feel a lack of high frequency richness and the human voices are not so natural as expected (e.g. as with my analogue setup). I know that many will disagree with that, but that is not only my opinion, but also that of others, who come to listen my well known system. I'm waiting for more audiophile visits, hopefully in August.
I think that the problem could be due to the Sony analogue board, or to the digital FIR problem, pointed out by Cyrilmartin on Audiogon.
In the first case an upgrade of the output stage and clock as designed by the Wright's modifiers could work very well. In the latter case it would be more hard to improve the sound of this player. I have no time to try different mods by myself and I'm waiting to see what DIY kit Dan Wright could offer at a reasonable price (e.g. Solid State instead of the more expencive tube/transformer output).
When I will have important news I will update my audio site:

http://digilander.libero.it/agostino.manzato/audio/reportage/sony_xa5400es/sony_xa5400es.html

Ciao!

P.S. About the desirable audio review... if he is so happy with the XA5400ES I can give him mine plus some money (covering the shippings) if he will give me his Marantz CD7 ;)

I would like to get a 5400 but no one carries this player here in Houston, any recommendation for a reputable mail order retailer that offers this player with some discount ?

I would like to avoid American Theater if at all possible.
