Thanks for the pictures, much welcomed! I modded my SCD-XA3000ES with TentClock, ZapFilter, schottky diodes and black gate caps in PSU. The sound is phenomenal and wasn't expensive (ca. $500). The same mods look like obvious candidates even for the XA5400ES. I'm slightly worried about the analog board under the digital though. It could be quite challenging to mount some external analog section there.
However, do get the service manual for your XA5400ES. It helps in identifying all the missing parts.

Dear Karlosak, if possible, I would like to have more details of your "sound-very-interesting- mods and on what you feel where the most improtant. Yes, I also think that it will be hard to add external parts, while it should be easier upgrade parts (e.g. caps) in the same board or simply do design a replacing board (if someone have the ability to do it for the DIY market). I don't really know where I can get the service manual (I have the "user" manual, which don't says nothing useful): do you have any help on how to get it?
Ciao! Tino

The downside of mods is that they void the warranty, which on the 5400ES, is 5 years parts and labor.

Sorry Cherubino, how do you know that the warranty is 5 years?
I have unsuccessfully tried to register my Sony SCD-XA5400ES on the Sony-europe web site http://mysony.sony-europe.com/MySony. I was not able to register this product, because it is not available in the list of Super Audio CD player (where I can find only the XA9000ES and some cheaper models). Being unavailable to pick the right model, I was not able to fill the serial number and date of purchase fields. I don't understand if the registration is necessary for the warranty...
BTW, the retail who sent me the unit, at the phone told me that the Sony Europe warranty is 2 years, but I never read that anywhere. Tino
