There are several possibilities why I'm having this problem.

1. Sony is mislabeling their newest 80Gb model by adding the SACD logo to it

2 They added SACD detection circuitry in the console, but did not add a way to actually output Direct Streaming Digital through the HDMI connector. This is a possibility... becuase the DSD indicator on my Yamaha receiver (it does have one... and it's mentioned in the RX-V3800 manual) never lights up for anything I play on the game console... however that could instead be a problem with the $1600 receiver I purchased a few months ago. It should light up for Dolby True HD, but it does not. Instead it shows all 7 speaker indicators lighting up (Full surround sound) during Dolby True HD audio playback on some Blu-ray discs. It is surround sound, though.

3 The pinouts for HDMI DSD playback have exactly the same defective wires on both of the new HDMI cables I have used between the Playstation 3 and my receiver. I don't know if the Playstation uses the same pinouts for SACD as it does for all the other formats that DO work on my system (regular DVD, Audio CD, Blu-ray, and Playstation 3 games.

The Playstation manual says that SACD playback can only be acieved through the HDMI connector... you cannot use the optical or the analog connectors to get true SACD playback. Which could mean (Sony is never clear) that you might only be able to playback the regular CD layer on a hybrid disc.... and not be able to play a non-hybrid SACD disc at all if you use the analog cable hookup or optical. in either case, that defeats the reason for purchasing hybrid SACD. Why spend the extra money for a hybrid cd if you have no way of playing the maximum quality of an SACD?

So instead of wasting dozens of hours trying to get the problem taken care of (I wrote to both Sony and Yamaha... end result both companies pointing fingers at each other) I will just go ahead and bite the bullet and settle for not being able to listen to SACD or hybrid cd's No more SACD purchases.

If you follow this link:

http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html

It explains that the PS3 does not output DSD

It explains exactly how to solve the connection problem

In my small theater and as second SA-CD setup I have European 60GB PS3 coupled with Yamaha RX-V863. It plays SA-CDs normally. Try setting Yamaha as an audio endpoint and disable all processing (use straight) and configure Video output of PS3 to 720p at least. Check that audio on PS3 is indeed routed through HDMI and not analog or optical connection.

As for TrueHD and DTS-MA lights, they will never light on on Yamaha or any other reciever, as long as you use PS3 for this tasks. PS3 decodes those formats internally and sends them out as LPCM as it can not bitstream them to reciever. This is hardware limitation of the PS3's HDMI chip.
