Discussion: Miles Davis: Someday My Prince Will Come

A reissue of SRGS4544 on hybrid CD??
I thought it was but both the Sony Japan and CD Japan sites claim its a later 2006 Remaster.

This edition only includes the six original tracks.

I was hoping that this edition included the bonus tracks — Blues No. 2 and the alternative take of "Someday My Prince Will Come."

Apart from the omission of the alternate tracks included on the RBCD and other editions, is the hybrid JSACD (as opposed to the '00 single-layer JSACD, or the George Marino-mastered, APO SACD) the one to get?

In addition-- can anyone comment on how Miles is captured on this recording? A search of the interwebs turns up a lot of complaining about the shrillness of his trumpet, but such was Miles' sound, no? And I imagine such an experience is highly system-dependent….. Of course, if Columbia's engineers did screw up here (a most unusual occurrence), then perhaps I'm best off opting for a cheap redbook version of this title….

Any feedback is most appreciated.

The George Marino remaster for Analogue Productions is a faithful transfer of the original recording. An audiophile LP collector friend of mine and I did an A/B comparison of a six-eye Columbia LP and the Analogue Productions SACD stereo program. We were both surprised at how similar they were. The stereo track of the Marino SACD does not appear to be remixed or sweetened.

Miles' horn, mostly mute on this session, is close-mic'd by Columbia's engineers. On the Analogue SACD it is not shrill. I have heard original LP pressings of the late-50s and early 60s Miles Davis recordings, and those same titles on Sony (USA) RBCDs, JVC XRCDs and Analogue Productions SACDs. Sony's remastering tends to over-emphasize high end, which brings up the cymbals and punches the drum kit in general, but lends shrillness to the trumpet (if not the tenor sax).

Not so with the Analogue Productions series, nor Alan Yoshida's JVC XRCDs.
