This new set to which Classics Today gives a rave review:

will also be released on SACD, I assume in multi-channel but I can't find confirmation of that. The concertos are live (with applause), the Paganini Rhapsody is a studio recording.

I listed this a while ago:

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos (complete) - Stephen Hough

BTW, I'd be careful with tinyurl. The guy who operates this site has algorithms which can result in the url being modified for personal gain (inserting affiliate ids etc). While not technically stealing, the fact that he still doesn't highlight this fact anywhere on his site (AFAIK) means that he's not to be trusted. There was some discussion on the amazon associates forum a while ago. You've been warned!

David Hurwitz gave them a 10/10 and considered them to be the best all-around cycle available, which, he admits, is saying a lot.

Thanks for the tip-off, Zeus - sorry I missed your announcement or I might not have bothered duplicating that.

Significant maybe that Dave Hurwitz says it's the best of the *cycles* available, I might be more interested if he compared them to the common consensus of best individual recordings, say Janis, Pletnev and Zimerman in #1, Richter and others in #2 etc. Although he does mention Argerich, Michelangeli and some others.

Certainly sounds like a great set, especially in multi-channel, I've pre-ordered it.

Thanks

The November issue of BBC Music magazine has an amusing article by Stephen Hough about the recording of this set.
He tells of the difficulties caused by mobile phones, beepers, raucous coughs, a snoring audience member etc.
For me, the audience applause on these recordings, which starts before the music has finished, would seriously spoil my enjoyment, but for others (peteyspambucket?) this would not be a problem. It gets 4/5 for performance and sound.

Hopefully they will edit out the applause? I think live recordings are great (Bernstein did all of his DG recordings live, for example) but the applause doesn't need to stay.

I agree the applause should be edited out, but I believe that in this case that has not happened because it arrives before the music has finished!

It seeems that nowadays people are conditioned to clap at the end of any exciting and noisy piece whether it is appropriate or not e.g. after the 3rd movement of Tchaikovsky 6th symphony, but discussion of that probably needs another thread :).

Sometimes the audience came in so quickly at the end, that the cuts were rather abrupt, so they had to add a fake reverb effect. Bernstein and the VPO also typically did patch up sessions after the audience had gone home.

Eh, people have been doing that for a long long long time. I have a bootleg of Szell/Cleveland performing Tchaikovsky 6th symphony from the mid '60s, and the audience claps after the 3rd movement.

When will this SACD set be available in the US? Does anyone know when the MTT Mahler 2nd will be available as well in the US?
