This new live opera set Verdi: La Traviata - Mehta has just got a good review in International Record Review, both for performance and sound.

To which I would wholeheartedly add:
Grieg: Olav Trygvason, Orchestral Songs - Ruud (OT is the incomplete opera that Greig started - a fun listen and not well known; should definitely fit the bill in every respect)
Mozart: Don Giovanni - Jacobs
Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro - René Jacobs

I'm only interested in a 1 SACD Disc, I was hoping to get a less than 14$ since I have a very small budget for this gift.

Best Regards,

No problems but you should be aware that few operas are shorter than 80 minutes so will never be single discs (unless excerpts). There are those from the Living Stereo series which are cheaper (but still probably over $14 unless one is prepared to buy used through, for example, an Amazon re-seller) but whilst many performances are certainly "amazing", with the best will in the world a 40 year old recording will no longer be considered "amazing", astonishingly well done though the re-masterings are. It should also be noted that the MCH releases are in fact 3-channel recordings (not surround). For a certain generation, though, this experience will be wonderful...

I haven't personally heard these, but the following are (on the whole) recommended by those here (and I've had few, if any, bad experiences using this site as a basis for purchases):
Verdi & Puccini: Arias - Leontyne Price
Richard Strauss: Music from Salome, Elektra - Borkh/Reiner
Anna Moffo: Arias
Puccini: La Boheme - Leinsdorf (complete)
Puccini: Madame Butterfly - Leinsdorf (complete)
Verdi: La Traviata - Previtali (complete)
Puccini: Turandot - Leinsdorf (complete)

A more modern excerpts disc that might fit your requirements could be:
Handel: La Maga Abbandonata - Curtis
or
Mozart, Schubert: Opera & Concert Arias - Elly Ameling

I would also add that, in any case, for (largely) modern recordings $14 is arguably unrealistically low for even "normal" RBCD's, let alone SACD's (which are typically $4 more per disc than the comparable RBCD) as few bargain issuers are in this market at present (and it is a great shame that Naxos withdrew support from this medium). For example, the recent EMI discs of BPO/Rattle retail for around $17 on RBCD.

Regards

PN

Best Regards,

If your friend likes vintage sets, Living Stereo has a bunch. Each is a double cd set.

Turandot-Nilsson is awesome
La Boheme-Moffo and Tucker I very good.
La Traviata-Moffo and Tucker again
They can be purchased from various places using the links from this site.
The cheapest one is Turandot from Amazon for 16.99.
Hope this helps.

Regards,

I own all of the RCA Living Stereo SACDs listed by Polly Nomial and they're all splendid performances and recordings. Please note that the Electra/Salome excerpts, while extremely dramatic, are not from aria based operas, and the person for whom you're buying may not like it if they're interested in melodic music.

For OPERA the Puccini: Madame Butterfly - Leinsdorf would be a sure bet.

--But no-one here has suggested any WORLD MUSIC....
Your friend obviously enjoys vocal music, so perhaps Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Raise Your Spirit Higher, Wenyukela would satisfy (14.99 at amazon.com).

I would have a concern with Puccini: Madame Butterfly - Leinsdorf for the mere fact that there are some pressing issues in which the second disc, even though it is labeled as the second disc, is the same as the first disc. Usually I wouldn't worry about something like this, but I'm 0 for 3 in finding one without this problem.

I recommend Verdi & Puccini: Arias - Leontyne Price. I'm amazed everytime I listed to this, however it is a compilation. It's also cheap.
