I'd love to hear this in 5.1 as i have the CD and from the reviews i've read this is a stellar SACD. Unfortunately i've not seen it for sale at less than £90 :-( which is quite a lot of cash.

Anyone know of a source for this that won't break the bank?

A used one is currently available on US Amazon for $45 USD, which would be what, about 25 GBP with postage?

Hi all! I have just registered, but I have been lurking for a while...

I have recently bought a copy of this great Bowie album in SACD, and after several listenings I seem to have found a little glitch in the mix, something like a "click" or a bit of "high frequency static".

It's on the first track ("Sunday") in the 2 channel mix (I listen with headphones only), at approximately 0:57, when Bowie sings "Look for the shafts of light on the road" between the "look" and "for" words. It's rather faint and very very brief but if you are not listening casually it's impossible to miss it. It only seems to happen in the right channel.

I have the same album also on CD, and while I seem to hear a glitch in the same exact position... it's much less noticeable, almost imperceptible unless I pay huge attention.

If someone of you has this same SACD, would you mind checking the 2 channel mix (of course with headphones!) and tell me if you hear the same click/glitch? I am quite curious to know if it's a fault of my pressing or if it's a glitch in the mix itself...

Thank you very much!

(Player used: Denon 1930... waiting to save money for a Marantz 11S2)

If you hear the same glitch on a RBCD and the SACD then it's unlikely to be caused by the pressing. You'll surely find it on the CD layer of the SACD too.

Whether it's something in the mix you could determine by listening to the multichannel mix. It just will not go well with headphones.

Well, actually I "think" I hear that glitch in the RBCD too... but it's actually MUCH less noticeable. BTW, this SACD has no CD layer, it's not a hybrid...

I tried the multichannel mix... but no glitch (although, listening with headphones, I could only listen to the two front channels!).

I am curious to know about the content. How does would you compare it to classic Bowie of the Low, Lodger, Scary Monsters era? I have the Scary Monsters SACD and liked it more in the olden days than I do now. Still, there's some good stuff that makes it a fun, once-in-a-while SACD.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Personally I think "Heathen" is an extremely fine album. Not as "genuine" as the classics, maybe a bit overproduced in sound, but all the songs are very good, quite diverse in style, and it has lots of atmosphere. IMHO it's the best Bowie album after his classics, and IMHO vastly superior to "Scary Monsters". Personally, I would rank it in the three-four top Bowie albums.

Thank you!!

Appreciate your comments. My favorite Bowie album is Low, - second is probably Heroes; Lodger and Scary Monsters. I really dislike all of the glam/Ziggy Stardust thing...

Sounds like I should check out Heathen.

Thanks again,

Sure! And the SACD version is really good (apart from this glitch which I still have to understand if it's only in my copy or not!). I have bought mine from amazon.co.uk: a bit pricey, but not as pricey as in some other places.

If you prefer the Berlin period, you should certainly like this album quite a bit. It also contains some fine contribution from external musicians, such as Pete Townshend (with some killer guitar riffs in "Slow Burn").
