COME ON SONY - RELAUNCH SACD. NOW IS THE TIME. CD SALES ARE SLIPPING EVERYWHERE. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO RETAIN BUSINESS, OUR CHANCE TO HAVE QUALITY MUSIC. NOW THAT DVD-A IS PRETTY MUCH DEAD, GET THE SACD TRAIN MOVING AGAIN!

Sony are supporting Blu-ray now.
SonyBMG within the next year or so will start to release albums on Blu-ray Disc, some with high res video, some with just audio, some with internet activity, etc.
It's coming, it will be awesome.

I've resigned myself to the fate that SACD will never be more than a niche market. Their opportunity to make this format the "new" CD is over now that Blu-ray has won the HD video battle. Sony will be putting their marketing dollars there. I will keep buying SACD's as long as they are available which I believe will be a long time for classical titles (which is what I listen to anyway).

But will it sell?

No, one and a half years ago, when the PlayStation3 with SACD playback came out -- that would have been the time to relaunch the format. It seems by then the other divisions had already gotten too tired fighting for it. Little wonder then that in the end SCE also gave up and removed SACD support from the 3rd-generation PS3.

Oh and please stop shouting. Or do something about your caps lock key.

Eh ... what is the future of a video-less video disc ... weather it was DVD-A or BluRay Audio????

You seem to know a bit more than the rest of us ... so what is your strategy at Sony?

SADC multichannel seems to sell pretty well as a carrier of classical music ... but do you see a future for providing with "classical music live concerts" like pop/rock musicians are doing? The cult status of some performers will be emphasized as in pop/rock music .... so it shall eventually cost even further to make those discs ... but do you think they will sell more?

Do you know what they are planning to do in Sony Classical? If you don't can you please ask them and provide us with the answer?

Esa

My horizons are now:

1) Make do with buying what titles I don't own.
2) Ensure whatever hardware I have can play my "old" SACDs and DVD-As because I don't want to buy them all over again.

If Blu-Ray disc has a good audio standard built in and people are buying players as the new default for watching movies, and there is no danger of confusing the disc with a regular CD then there's your answer.

What is the Blu-Ray audio standard? Is it just high-rez/high-sample PCM? Or is it a completely different format?

Yes, that and 7.1-channel surround formats (based on high-res PCM) Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio.

Hi,

BluRay Audio discs will be returned to the seller if there is no simultaneous video content with audio. BluRay Audio discs will be confused with the actual BluRay discs ... not with CDs ever.

My guess is that this kind of discs will not be distributed widely but they will be sold in the same specialist shops that sell other marginal discs like SACDs and LPs.
