is anybody in a position to report on the sound quality of this in multichannel mode?
specifically, are the two rear channels used much?

Yes. The rears give you the impression of sitting in the hall. Enjoy.

I really want to buy this item but there aren't any reviews. Do you have comments?

Google the RBCD Carnegie Hall Presents boxset of Lenny's Mahler cycle from the 60s. There's enough reviews to last you a lifetime.

One by one, starting with the Fifth, I gathered in that whole first Bernstein cycle. The interpretations are important, and the sound is wonderful. I also have the most recent CD box set, and the SACD is significantly better. I say, go for it!

The sound of the SACD was a huge improvement over the previous CD versions (first the Royal Edition, then the SBM remaster), because they went back to the multi-track masters.
This new transfer/remix was also used for the latest CD reissues, so if you can't find the SACD (or don't want to spend as much) make sure to get the recent CD.
