Thread: Possible SACD defect? Mahler 9 MTT

I just recieved the MTT Mahler 9. There may be a defect with this disc. Perhaps some here can shed some light. Near the center hole of disc one, there seems to be a kind of air bubble that moves around, depending on how much pressure is exerted when I place the disc in the case. Is the disc delaminating? Is this a cause to return the disc? If I use a case with less pressure it seems to keep the air bubbles from coming back. The disc needs to be held in the light to see the problem. Any insights are appreciated. Thanks.

Have just checked my copy that was purchased shortly after its release.
I can find no bubble or any other imperfection and it plays perfectly.
If I was you I would get an exchange to be on the safe side.

Actually, I have done just that. I wasn't able to get another copy of the ninth. I will be getting a copy of the sixth instead! Can't wait to heat that after the glowing reviews.

It sounds a little like my problem with a recording from the Arsis label.

See the thread, "SACD manufacturing problems?".

I wonder if there is a manufacturing plant in common here.

Just checked my copy, and I think I see the problem you're referring to. I've noticed a similar problem with some of my Bob Dylan SACDs, Blood on the Tracks being one. It hasn't caused any problems so far with playback (on a Marantz SA8001). I'm going to leave it alone, not pick at it, and hope for the best.

But see also this thread: /showthread/26207/26262/y#26262

I have also just checked my disks of the MTT Mahler 9 and find exactly the fault that you describe on both. I also have symphonies 5,6 and 7, as well as Das klagende Lied, in the same series, but all these seem unaffected. Odd that the fault should be restricted to the 9th symphony; it plays without any problems at the moment, but could well deteriorate over time. I think I will attempt to get a new copy from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra people, just to be on the safe side.

Peter
