With DIVERTIMENTI we continue where we left MOZART. We’re in the same venue, with the same orchestra, and basically the same microphone technique is applied. We have further refined the placement of our microphones and believed that we have managed to reveal even finer details of the musical structure, without losing the force of the full ensemble and the orchestral timbre. The repertoire is chosen from the ensembles own favorites. One major difference from MOZART is the type of microphones used; for DIVERTIMENTI we use five identical and matched microphones, still omnidirectional but with a larger membrane giving slight directional focus. Why do we publish on both Hybrid SACD and Blu-ray in the same box? For a limited time and volume this two-disc box will be offered as an introduction of Blu-ray at the price of one ordinary CD. Normal price will later be 1,5x that of one Hybrid SACD.

All resolutions and encodings presented on these two discs are derived from the same original DXD source files, and should make an interesting case for DIRECT evaluation of audio formats, encodings and resolutions.

Why multiple multichannel encodings? Isn't the first mandated for players?
And a general question: these discs will require a TV to play (select the encoding you want)?
I don't have a Blu-ray player, just curious.

Another question: if someone has a PS3 that can play all audio flavours of this release, which one would you recommend most?

DTS is mandated, but the non-lossy DTS-HD and DolbyTrueHD are not.
Most players have an Audio button on the remote that should make a TV unneccessary for switching modes.

What would you think would provide the best stereo sound? SACD or Linear PCM?
What would you think would provide the best surround sound? SACD or the BD formats...?

We have implemented as many encodings as we can possibly fit into this BD50 (dual layer) with the purpose of getting your help to evaluate the quality, and to choose which one to use in future releases. Normally a BD25 with only selected encodings would be sufficient for a Blu-ray containing music only.

DTS Master Audio, but it all depends on your receiver ...

This is an extremely difficult question – and one of the reasons that we present all versions on this disc; to get your help with the evaluation. All resolutions are sample rate converted from the same DXD source files. Comparing them in our studio we find only subtle differences from DXD down to 192kHz and 96kHz. The obvious degeneration is from 96kHz down to 48kHz. I find DSD somewhat different in the color from DXD and 192kHz PCM; in some mysterious way it’s softer and more beautiful but slightly less detailed. In my opinion PCM encoded to DTS Master Audio and DD True HD is not degenerated from the original 192kHz. The most obvious reduction is in the 48kHz core extracted from the DTS. And the mandatory Dolby Digital 48kHz just sounds terrible, compared to the original DXD.
Please accept these as my strict personal opinions; We would highly appreciate YOUR evaluation of these resolutions and encodings.
