Are all multi-channel SACDs two-channel as well as multi-channel? Or do I have to find this info on the label? The online listings don't seem to mention these facts. I have a high-end stereo set up which is capable of the most neutral, transparent, wide-sound-staged, detailed sound and I just want to get the most listening pleasure from it - and SACD is the ticket. But I don't want to end up with disks that don't match my system.

The SACD spec requires that all SACD's must have a two channel mix, at a minimum. It may optionally also have a multichannel, and a two channel Redbook spec CD layer.

ditto
Don't worry about how a SACD is advertised or described at amazon.com or whatever. If it is in fact a multi-channel disc, there will ALWAYS be a dedicated 2 channel version (no fold down mix as with DVD-A).
The sound is great, jump right in and don't look back

MCH SACD sounds best. even a cheap player sounds better with MCH SACD than an expensive player that is STEREO only. Best Buy at the moment is the Sony XA5400ES

While Sony/Philips mandated a SACD should have a dedicated hi-rez stereo (or mono) mix, not every title actually has one. For example, the SACD of "Ray Charles - Live at the Olympia 2000" is multi-channel surround only....
Ray Charles: Live at the Olympia 2000
Fortunately, there're very few of such SACDs....about 30 according to Zeus' stats.

Not entirely true. The Decca Eloquence titles have only MC SACD and RBCD layers. No 2-channel SACD layer /titles/0/366/date/100/1

I agree completely about MCH being the end all, be all compared to stereo. I think the best buy at the moment is the Oppo BDP83. I doubt that the sonic difference is very great via the Mch HDMI outputs Oppo vs. the Sony , but I have not heard them side by side. Kal has and has not reported a huge difference. The Sony might be slightly better via its stereo-only analog outputs than the Oppo. But, the Oppo does Mch analog out, Blu-ray, DVD-A and V and CD, whereas the Sony only plays SACD and CD.

William welcome to the wonderful world of 2 channel SACD, we seem to be outnumbered by the Multichannel enthusiasts.
Most SACDs do have a dedicated high resolution 2 channel stereo program these are indicated by "Content: Stereo" or Content: "Stereo/Multichannel". The few SACDs with no stereo hi-res program are indicated as: Content: "Multichannel"
There is only one Telarc without a 2 channel stereo layer: The Big Picture - Kunzel Michael Bishop explained that there was not enough room as the program was too long, so it only has a Multichannel mix and a CD layer. Most 2 channel players cannot mix down Multichannel to Stereo so if your player is one of those you will not be able to play the hi-res layer at all, just the CD layer.
Also as mentioned the 10 titles in the Eloquence budget series of SACDs from DGG, Philips and Decca /search/Eloquence have no hi-res Stereo program.
The other SACDs missing 2 channel stereo programs include: Dupré: Le Chemin de la Croix - Friedhelm Flamme , Sea Change, The Choral Music of Richard Rodney Bennett - Rutter, Ray Charles: Live at the Olympia 2000 , Tomorrow's Jazz Classics 2005 .
Interesting note on "Sea Change" when contacted about not including a 2 channel stereo hi-res layer Collegium Records said they didn't think one was needed as SACD was a multichannel format and there was a CD layer for 2 channel listeners. They seemed to be blind about the high resolution aspect of SACD and just thought it was a multichannel format, they only released two SACDs and their second one had a hi-res Stereo program.
It is safe to say 99.9% of SACDs have a dedicated 2 channel stereo hi-res program.
