Well, here is the confirmation of something everybody suspected already

quote one little indian records

hi

I am really sorry - but we have no plans to make any future releases available on sacd

unfortunately there was not enough demand for this format to enable us to cover all our costs

Sorry

End quote

Maybe we all should write them? But maybe they are right. I am just startled that it is more expenive to release a hybrid SACD than producing a special edition with such an opulent art work and an extra DVD.

I suspect the assessment of demand was done before the user base of SACD virtually doubled thanks to the release of PlayStation3 a year ago.

I think the problem is different. Hi-rez is not considered relevant on the pop market, but surround sound is.

So if a label wants to sell a surround reissue of a pop title, the most logical thing is to release a CD+DVD package (in addition to a cheaper CD-only reissue), as most pop listeners interested in surround sound have a home theatre system with a DVD player, but no SACD-compatible player. I don't think the PS3 is used much for SACD playback. That's why Sony dropped SACD support on the 40GB PS3.

This is the reason why there have been more CD+DVD reissues in the past, and less SACD reissues. A hybrid SACD + DVD package would be perfect, but the labels may think that the SACD is redundant, as the DVD already offers surround sound.

Well, that leads me to the question: Is DTS 96/24 worse than PPCM 96/24? Or even 88.2/24 If not, than it would be OK I guess. I am not sure though... Volta sound pretty good in DTS. I know I am sort of a amateur when it comes to the differences. Nevertheless I would appriciate some insight.
Well, I compared the DTS on Peter Gabriels Growing Up DVD-Single to the SACD Version and it sounded harsher but, on the other hand, I think that was normal DTS not DTS 96/24.

Thanks for any info

At the same resolution (24 bit) and sample rate (96 kHz) PCM is better than DTS because it's not compressed... but if we're talking about DVD-Video then PCM is stereo only while DTS is multichannel.

Can anyone explain to me why the record label can't recover their costs on Bjork SACDs, when these SACDs are among the best selling of all SACDs? Are most of the classical SACDs also losing money, or is it more costly to release a Bjork SACD?

I recently got Verspertine on SA-CD. I already have the original CD and the dual-disc set. The SA-CD takes it to another dimension. Stunning. And this on my favourite album!
So come on One Little Indian - do us all a favour.

Mail them, tell them that directly. I think we need to pester them about that. After all, the most expensive thing about an surround SACD is the surround mix, I believe, and they have already done that.
