I've seen some good-to-great reviews on this Philips DVD-935-SA. It's so cheap it's hard to believe it sounds good - especially with all the video circuits.

How about this? I'm looking for a gift for a friend and I don't want to get him a piece of crap... but OTOH I can't spend the 1000 US beans I paid for my Marantz 8260. He would by using it in his (nice) audio system, not for TV.

Advice? Information? "You get what you pay for" still the operating theory?

I have a friend who has one,he is very pleased with the sound.BTW You can turn
off the video circuit. Music Direct was selling the DVA963SA on there E Mail
list for $350.00. At that price this is a exceptional player.

Dan, I'd consider the Sony SCD-CE595 - listed for $149.95 on Sony's site. I have an earlier version of this that was my launch point into SACD-I still use it (I also now have the 9000ES) and it sounds great. Music-only.

Every sticker on the front of the player represents a licensing fee for the manufacturer which, in turn, determines what they can put in the box at a certain price point. I think it's great Sony has stuck with CD/SA-CD only players. Also Marantz, but at a higher starting point.

Good point, Zeus.

Thanks to all who have contributed their thoughts and experience. I think I am just too chicken to give my friend a $250 deck (that's the lowest price I found for the Philips!) to nestle in among his McIntosh and Denon components. But I'll give him a good demo of SACD playback and let nature take its course!

8-)
