Hi together,

I am new to the SACD world and would like to ask you for a help concerning what player is good for a newbie. With the search engine I couln't find a thread. My interest is 2.0 stereo and not surround (not enough space). I ask myself if a SACD only player is maybe better than a multifunctional player. The price could be up to 1000 Euro, if it is less I wouldn't be dissapointed. :)

Many thanks for any help !

Cheers
Kai from Germany

Pioneer D9 (900 euro).
Tested in the german magazine Audio in december 2007.
--> high-end class --> 110 points for SACD, 100 points for CD.

Pioneer D6 (500 euro)
Tested in the german magazine Audio in february 2007.
--> high-end class --> 100 points for SACD and 95 points for CD

To compare
The Accuphase DP800/DC801 (25000 euro !!) is the best player (reference class --> 140 points for SACD and CD)
Reference class starts at 115 points in this magazine, so the D9 seems to be very good (I don't own it myself).

I can think of a handful of players that will outperform the Accuphase. To name only two the Emm Labs Meitner and the DCS are much more transparent.

What amp and speakers will you be using?

@ Hans: bedankt !

Amps: I have two old Duals (CV40, CV1700) and a Pioneer A-616. I am also thinking in a new amp.

Speakers at the moment are Arcus TS 40. In the basement are Heco 850 Forte, those shall be playing after my next move in a bigger appartement.

In looking for SACD players, try to make sure that they will display the SACD track text and can do gapless playing ie during a continuous work subdivided with extra tracks, there is no break in playback between these tracks in the continuous work. I'm not sure if the JLTi multichannel SACD player from http://www.vacuumstate.com/ and its worldwide agents will fit your budget.

Thanks, those two Hans also recommended. I called my local HIFI-dealer (yes, such stores still exist) this morning for a testlistening.

I'd love the PD9 in particular, if I could justify the extra cost of the PS3 I already have! Alas, I cannot. Good luck to you though and please relay your experiences if you get the chance.

Kai,

being a "Newbie" is irrelevant. You want the best player you can afford and despite your saying you aren't interested in MCH because you don't have space. I would think more in terms of "what music do I like" rather than space because the rear channels don't need to take up that much room. I love classical music and my tastes run to large, no, read REALLY BIG orchestral works, but my rear channel speakers are mounted on the wall. They are Omnisats by Mirage.

http://www.miragespeakers.com/omnistat.shtml

They really do the job required of them very very well. In the music I enjoy, they are rarely called upon to do more than handle reflected sound from the back and side walls of the auditorium in which the music was recorded. This would be true of most acoustic music such as piano jazz as well. The realism obtained from the rear channels is really eye-opening.

You can purchase the multi-channel player and use it for stereo until you can afford a good mch pre-amp or receiver. If you only get a stereo player you have made what may be a life time investment and may have precluded yourself from stepping up to mch.
