Here a picture of the first multichannel SACD prototype. This machine did not make any impression at the demonstration, that's why Philips asked to build an custom chassis; the SCD2000.

Ah, the modified DVD930 cabinets. Yes, I remember seeing those at IFA, probably in 1999.

I have emailed sameone who works at Philips and who was part of the team of the development of SACD at Philips, he says the player on the picture is no SACD player. 24bit/96kHz has nothing to do with SACD he says.

I agree to the latter (it's an odd piece of paper, whichever way you look at it) but you'll agree that it's an odd device. It looks totally like a Marantz product, not like a Philips, except for the wordmark.

I agree, its a bit of a mystery, but the fact that it looks like a Marantz product doesnt have to mean anything; the SCD2000 looks like a Marantz product also... ;)

I just listened PIONEER DV-LX50. Poor video but sounds amazing in DSD via HDMI.

Well, if we get started about prototypes we can go on for a while. There has also been a prototype player for professional use that had much of the internals of the SACD1000 but looked like a rack-mount version of a Philips DVD750 player (same display, cluster button, etc.) I'm not sure about the name but believe it was called the Philips SACD10PE. it was black. I don't have a picture of it.

It was sold to studios so they could start evaluating the results of their first multichannel SACD productions and is probably what lead the DVD FAQ http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.12 to write "Philips released a $7,500 player" although the date it mentions matches that of the SACD1000 ($2,000) rather.

What about this one though?

I received an email from Andrew Demery who told this about that player:

Good to hear from Demery.

My guess would have been the picture was taken at the Concern Research Exhibition, about 1998, but only because that's where I recall seeing it. I believe I did not take this picture myself.

I do have some (poor) pictures from prototypes -- mostly mock-ups -- by various other brands (Philips/Marantz, Sharp, Onkyo, even Aiwa) that never reached production if you're interested. They're from CES 1998 or so.
